Suspect Charged with Murder in February Death near Expressway

BOSTON, March 26, 2013—An Everett man is in custody this evening, charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of Corey Thompson in Boston’s South End last month, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

CHRISTOPHER W. POWELL (D.O.B. 5/2/73) is expected to be arraigned tomorrow in the Boston Municipal Court.

State Police detectives assigned to Conley’s office had been investigating Thompson’s death since the morning of Feb. 25, when a passerby observed his body beneath a Route 93 overpass near the intersection of Albany and Traveler streets. An autopsy revealed that the 44-year-old South End man had been stabbed.

Based on evidence developed in the course of that investigation suggesting that Powell stabbed Thompson during a physical altercation at the scene, prosecutors approved Powell’s arrest today. In a post-Miranda statement to investigators, he allegedly made statements admitting that he stabbed Thompson.

The Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit has jurisdiction over death investigations in Chelsea, Revere, Winthrop, and, as in this case, State property within the City of Boston.
