Suspect Held in Theater District Homicide

BOSTON, Aug. 24, 2017—The man who allegedly shot and killed 28-year-old Michael Miranda was ordered held without bail at his murder arraignment today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

KIEWANN WATSON (D.O.B. 6/6/88) of Mattapan was also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm for the incident that also left a 21-year-old man injured with nonfatal gunshot injuries.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Hickman of the DA’s Homicide Unit told Boston Municipal Court Judge Thomas Horgan that Miranda, Watson, and others in their respective groups were on Tremont Street when an altercation that arose out of an earlier incident erupted at about 2:15 on Sunday morning. The altercation was broken up, but the two groups soon re-engaged one another.

As Watson and others proceeded down a nearby path, Watson allegedly turned and fired multiple shots at the group behind him, striking Miranda and the second victim. Miranda died of his injuries on Aug. 22 and the second man is expected to survive.

Watson was identified through video footage from cameras in the area, forensic evidence from the area, and Boston Police apprehended him on a warrant yesterday.

Elise McConnell is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate. Watson was represented today by attorney Frank Camera and will return to court on Sept. 27.
