Suspect in Custody For Fatal Chelsea Hit-and-Run

A Chelsea man is under arrest for the death of 36-year-old Julio Vaquerano last month, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said tonight.

State Police homicide detectives assigned to Conley’s office and Chelsea Police detectives this evening arrested LUIS GABRIEL ESCALANTE (D.O.B. 1/30/88) on charges of felony motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of an accident causing death, and operating under the influence. He is expected to be arraigned on those charges tomorrow morning in Chelsea District Court.

Vaquerano, a Revere resident, was found near the intersection of Blossom and Maple streets in Chelsea at about 10:00 on the night of Dec. 14. Chelsea Police responding to a 911 call found him suffering from major trauma, including serious head injuries, consistent with being struck by a motor vehicle.

Vaquerano was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit, which has jurisdiction over all death investigations in Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop, joined the investigation and were assisted by the State Police Crime Scene Services Section and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.

Escalante’s arrest comes after continued efforts by State and Chelsea police to identify and apprehend the driver of the vehicle that struck Vaquerano. Tonight, acting on information developed in the course of those efforts, prosecutors approved motor vehicle homicide and related charges against Escalante.

Authorities said the investigation was still ongoing, however, and urged anyone with information on the incident to contact Chelse Police detectives at 617-466-2864 or State Police at 617-727-8817.
