Suspect in Ranger Stabbings Indicted, Arraigned

BOSTON, Dec. 2, 2014—The man who allegedly stabbed two park rangers when they asked him to put out a cigarette was held on $1 million bail at his Superior Court arraignment today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

BODIO HUTCHINSON (D.O.B. 8/6/80) was arraigned on two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and single counts of assault and battery and aggravated assault and battery.  Clerk Magistrate Anne Kaczmarek imposed $1 million bail at the request of Assistant District Attorney Lynn Feigenbaum of the DA’s Senior Trial Unit. The Suffolk County Grand Jury indicted Hutchinson on Nov. 24.

The victims, both Boston park rangers, were on patrol in the Boston Common on the afternoon of Oct. 14, when they were alerted to a man with a knife in the area of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at the center of the park.   There, they found Hutchinson sitting on the monument, smoking a cigarette.

The rangers approached Hutchinson and informed him smoking was not allowed on the Common, asked for his ID, and inquired as to whether he had a knife. Prosecutors say Hutchinson stood quickly and brandished the knife at them. When he refused orders to drop the weapon, the rangers used pepper spray on him, prosecutors said.

Hutchinson allegedly lunged at one of the rangers, stabbing him in the torso and severing an artery.  The second ranger lost his footing and fell; Hutchinson stabbed him twice in the side and three times in the arm as he was on the ground.  Hutchinson then walked back toward the first victim and slashed him on the side of his back, prosecutors said.

Hutchinson briefly sat on the monument before calmly walking toward the Public Garden, prosecutors said.  As good Samaritans rendered aid to the injured Park Rangers, another witness followed Hutchinson and provided information to a 911 operator.

Boston Police officers responded and observed Hutchinson toss an object into the lagoon in the Public Garden.  He then allegedly shouted to police, “Shoot me!  Shoot me!”  Officers were able to take him into custody and recover a pink-handled knife with a 3.5 inch blade from the water near where Hutchinson threw the object.

Hutchinson was represented by Shannon Lopez.  He will return to court Jan. 6, 2015.
