Suspect Nabbed in Brutal July Beating

An East Boston man wanted for allegedly beating, slashing, and robbing a woman last summer was arrested this weekend and held on high bail at his arraignment yesterday, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

PAUL A. MORANI (D.O.B. 7/13/87) was formally charged yesterday with multiple counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as a single count of armed robbery and related offenses for the July 30 incident at the 20-year-old victim’s Revere home. Suffolk prosecutors recommended that he be held on $75,000 cash bail; Judge D. Dunbar Livingston set bail at $10,000.

“This was a violent and terrifying attack,” Conley said. “If the assailant thought we’d forget about it in a few months, he was dead wrong. Crimes of domestic violence are a priority for our office and Revere police. We’re here to support victims and hold offenders accountable under the law.”

Conley urged victims of any crime, including intimate partner violence, to call 911 in an emergency. SafeLink, a statewide domestic violence hotline, can be reached at 877-785-2020. SafeLink is answered by trained advocates 24 hours a day in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, as well as TTY at 877-521-2601. It also has the capacity to provide multilingual translation in more than 140 languages.

Revere Police had been searching for Morani since the day his girlfriend walked into their headquarters with multiple fractured ribs, a swollen face, and blood streaked across her left wrist. Investigators believe he had made his way to New Hampshire and even as far as Las Vegas before a tip brought detectives to the Comfort Inn on American Legion Highway late Saturday night.

The victim and Morani had been in a romantic relationship, the victim told police on July 30, and she had broken his cell phone during an argument the night before. That morning at about 8:00, Morani allegedly called her demanding $200 and threatening violence if she did not give it to him. Morani’s mother allegedly drove him to the victim’s home, where he demanded the victim’s phone during a conversation in her back yard.

When the victim refused to give him her phone, Morani allegedly drew a large knife and began punching her in the face. He allegedly struck her in the head with the butt of the knife and cut her wrist with the blade. When she fell to the ground, he allegedly began kicking her in the torso and stole her cell phone. When Morani’s mother got out to see what was happening and check on the victim, Morani allegedly got into her car and drove from the scene. He returned a short time later, picked up his mother, and allegedly told the victim that he would continue to beat her “until I get my money.”

On seeing the victim’s injuries at the station, Revere Police immediately called for medical assistance and began bandaging a laceration on her wrist. She was soon transported to Whidden Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

Revere Police began searching for Morani and contacted Boston Police for assistance in light of his East Boston residence. Revere Police also transported the victim to Chelsea District Court, where she obtained a restraining order against Morani. On Aug. 3, Morani allegedly called the victim at work repeatedly and posted messages to her Facebook account.

The search for Morani continued for months and included cooperative efforts by specialized units of the Revere and Boston police departments. They remained fruitless until Saturday, when Revere Police obtained information that he was staying at the Comfort Inn. Morani was arrested there without incident shortly after 9:00 p.m.

Morani was represented for bail purposes by attorney Matthew Machera. He will return to court on Jan. 10 for the appointment of further counsel.
