Teen Committed to DYS For Bringing Gun to School

A Roxbury youth has been committed to the Department of Youth Services for six years for bringing a loaded handgun into a Boston school last fall, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

DANTE HECTOR (D.O.B. 11/27/95) was 14 when he brought the firearm into the West Roxbury Educational Complex on the morning of Oct. 25, 2011. Hector pleaded guilty today to that offense and was sentenced by Juvenile Court Judge Terry Craven to DYS commitment to the age of 21.

Shortly after his arrest by Boston Police, Suffolk prosecutors moved to have Hector held under Ch. 276, Sect. 58A, of the Massachusetts General Laws, which allows a judge to hold a defendant accused of certain violent crimes without bail for up to 90 days pending trial upon “clear and convincing evidence that no conditions of release will reasonably assure the safety of any other person or the community.” Hector was deemed dangerous after that hearing and has been in custody since his arrest.

Assistant District Attorney Brooke Watson of Conley’s Juvenile Unit indicted Hector as a youthful offender, making his name a matter of public record and exposing him to the same potential penalties as an adult.

Hector was represented by attorney Craig Collins.
