Teens, 14 and 16, Charged with Murder in Killing of 16-Year-Old

BOSTON, June 15, 2015—Jonathan Dos Santos, 16, was shot and killed last week by a 14-year-old and 16-year-old working in concert, Suffolk County prosecutors said at the teens’ arraignment today on murder charges.

District Attorney Daniel F. Conley identified the youths as RAESHAWN MOODY (D.O.B. 2/8/01), most recently of Mattapan, and DUSHAWN TAYLOR-GENNIS (D.O.B. 12/29/98) of Dorchester. Though both are juveniles, their cases are open to the public because they are charged with murder; both are additionally charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

At the request of Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Hickman of the DA’s Homicide Unit, Dorchester Municipal Court Judge Thomas Kaplanes ordered both juveniles held without bail pending trial.

Hickman told the court that both juveniles are “clearly visible” on surveillance footage from a nearby market and appear to be waiting for someone as they walk back and forth along the sidewalk, talk on the phone, and even glance up at the camera on the evening of June 10.

At about 7:53 pm, Hickman said, the two separated from one another. One went across the street from the market and hid himself while the other stayed visible. Within a minute, the unsuspecting victim rode up on his bicycle.

Dos Santos and the juvenile who remained visible acknowledged one another, Hickman said. That juvenile made a gesture, prompting Dos Santos to duck and turn away. At about that time, Hickman said, the second juvenile came out, produced a handgun, and fired multiple shots at him.

Dos Santos was struck, rode a short distance on his bicycle, and collapsed with injuries that claimed his life a short time later. The juveniles fled the scene on foot.

Police and prosecutors acknowledged the role of private surveillance cameras in helping to solve the case but also noted that cooperating witnesses played a part in identifying the alleged assailants and led to their arrests on Saturday.

“The facts as we understand them are chilling,” Conley said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dos Santos family, and we urge anyone with additional information on Jonathan’s murder to share it with homicide detectives. We’re still in the early stages of this investigation and every piece of evidence matters.”

Moody is represented by attorney Michael Bourbeau and Taylor-Gennis by attorney Michael Doolin. They will return to court on July 15.
