There’s an App for That: Teens Charged after iPhone Theft

BOSTON, Jan. 7, 2015—Two juveniles were arraigned this week on armed robbery and other charges after Boston Police used an app on a stolen phone to pinpoint the teens’ location as they fled, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

A 17-year-old male from Mattapan and a 17-year-old female from Dorchester were arraigned Monday in the juvenile session of Dorchester Municipal Court on charges of delinquency to wit: armed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and receiving stolen property over $250. The charges stem from an incident in Dorchester early Sunday morning.

Assistant District Attorney Andrea Burke requested bail of $15,000 for the juvenile male and $10,000 for the juvenile female, as well as orders that each submit to GPS monitoring, remain under house arrest, stay away from the location of the incident, and stay away from the victims and each other in the event either is released on bail.  Clerk Jay Allen set the male’s bail at $5,000 and the female’s bail at $2,500 and imposed all of the requested conditions of release.

Boston Police responded to a report of an armed robbery on Alban Road shortly after 1:00 a.m. Sunday.  Officers spoke with the victims, a 22-year-old Dorchester woman and a 23-year-old Mashpee woman, who reported they had been robbed at gun point by two people and provided a description of the male and female suspects.  The male struck one victim in the head with a gun before he and his companion fled in the direction of Ashmont MBTA station with a white iPhone, a white Samsung phone, and a purse belonging to the victims.

One of the victims informed officers that her iPhone was equipped with an app that could track its location; police used the app and determined that the phone was traveling along the MBTA’s trolley line toward Mattapan.

Additional officers met the trolley upon its arrival at Mattapan station. They boarded and found it empty but for two passengers – a male and female matching the descriptions provided by the victims.  The male was holding a white iPhone to his ear and ignored the officers as he attempted to exit the train.  The officers stopped and pat-frisked him due to the report of a firearm being used in the robbery and recovered a black painted airsoft gun in his waistband.  Officers determined that the phone the male was carrying was that of the first victim.  The female juvenile was found in possession of the second victim’s purse and Samsung phone, prosecutors said.

Both juveniles will return to court Jan. 13.
