Three Men, One Teen Arraigned in Downtown Assault

BOSTON, April 15, 2014—Three men were arraigned today for taking part in an unprovoked attack on a stranger Friday, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

AYANLE MOHAMED (D.O.B. 1/1/90) of Charlestown, LIBAN DUALLE (D.O.B. 1/1/93) of Roxbury, and NUR HERSI (D.O.B. 1/1/91) of Roxbury were arraigned on charges of assault and battery and disorderly conduct in connection with the incident Friday in downtown Boston.  Mohamed is also charged with possession of Class B and D substances.  Judge Michael Coyne set bail for Mohamed at $10,000; Dualle at $15,000; and $30,000 for Hersi.  He ordered all three men to wear a GPS monitor, abide by a curfew, and stay away from downtown Boston in the event they are released on bail.

In addition, Coyne revoked Dualle’s bail on his four open cases out of Boston Municipal Court.  Those cases include 2014 charges of trespassing and affray for which he was arraigned in February; two 2013 cases, each charging trespassing; and a 2012 case charging distribution of a Class D substance, conspiracy to violate the state’s drug laws, and a school zone violation.

A fourth defendant, a 17-year-old Dorchester female, was arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court yesterday in connection with the case and held on $25,000 bail.

Assistant District Attorney Jim Evans told the court that members of the Boston Police Drug Control Unit were in the area of Tremont and Bromfield streets when they witnessed a man and woman approached by a group of six males and one female.  One of the males, later identified as Dualle, approached the male victim, and police saw the man wave Dualle away.  Dualle responded by punching the victim in the face, prosecutors said.  The woman attempted to help the victim but was pushed away by a member of the group, and every member of the group took part in an assault on the man in the middle of Bromfield Street during which the female was seen kicking the victim.  The assault ended and the group dispersed only as they heard sirens in the area as police rushed to respond.

Police were able to apprehend Mohamed and Hersi as the group fled.

Dualle and a 17-year-old female were spotted by police outside the State Street T station, where police heard the juvenile tell Dualle, “You got him good,” prosecutors said.  As police attempted to take the two into custody, Dualle began flailing his arms, screaming obscenities, and reached his hands to his waist while refusing commands by police to keep his hands visible, prosecutors said.  Fearing for officer safety, police brought Dualle to the ground in order to place him in handcuffs.

During booking, officers discovered a bag of cocaine in Mohamed’s change pocket and marijuana in his sock, prosecutors said.

The victims left the area in the aftermath of the incident. Despite a canvas of the area, officers were unable to locate them.

Mohamed is represented by attorney Jane Moynihan, Dualle by Steve Kim, and Hersi by Terry Stone.  They will return to court on May 12.
