TRIAL TO BEGIN FOR BROTHERS CHARGED IN FATAL STABBING

Jury selection is under way for the trial of two brothers accused of stabbing their mother’s live-in boyfriend to death of inside their Chelsea home two years ago.

EUGENE TEIXEIRA (D.O.B. 3/25/87) and AASIM SMITH (D.O.B. 4/13/92) are both charged with second-degree murder for the April 29, 2008, homicide of 25-year-old Shadeed “Cleo” Wiggins.

Evidence suggests that, after an argument, the defendants’ mother and Wiggins asked Teixeira and Smith to leave the Chester Avenue apartment where they all resided. The two brothers complied and left the home.

Teixeira and Smith allegedly returned to the apartment later that day and forced their way inside. Evidence suggests that the two defendants became engaged in a verbal altercation with Wiggins, which became fatal when Teixeira allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim seven times while Smith attempted to strike Wiggins with a baseball bat.

The two defendants allegedly fled the apartment after the attack.

Chelsea Police officers and Massachusetts State Police troopers who responded to the scene found Wiggins bleeding profusely at the bottom of a stairwell leading up to the second floor apartment. He was rushed to a local hospital and later died of his injuries.

Smith, who allegedly attempted to flee the scene on foot, was apprehended by officers following a brief chase. Teixeira was taken into custody later that evening after being apprehended in Cambridge. Following their arrests, Chelsea Police officers observed that neither Teixeira nor Smith had visible wounds and they were not bleeding.

Assistant District Attorney Cory Flashner of the Suffolk DA’s Homicide Unit is prosecuting the case with Assistant District Attorney Amy Galatis. Catherine Yuan is the assigned victim-witness advocate.

Teixeira is represented by attorney George Murphy and Smith is represented by attorney Stephen Weymouth. Both are currently being held without bail.

Judge Patrick Brady is presiding in courtroom 808 in Suffolk Superior Court.
