Two Charged in Winthrop Stabbing; Investigation Ongoing

Two Everett women were held on high bail today following their arraignment on charges that the robbery they’d planned led to a Winthrop woman’s near-fatal stabbing, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Assistant District Attorney Erik Bennett recommended that SHARNELL DONAHUE (D.O.B. 8/12/79) be held on $500,000 cash bail and DIANE TUCK (D.O.B. 7/2/59) be held on $250,000 cash bail at this morning’s proceedings in East Boston District Court. Judge Roberto Ronquillo, Jr., set both women’s bail at $50,000.

Both women are charged with armed assault with intent to rob; Donahue is additionally charged with armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Ronquillo granted prosecutors’ request that both women be ordered to stay away from the victim, stay out of Winthrop, and wear a GPS device if they post bail.

Winthrop Police responded to Forrest Street at about 7:45 p.m. for a report of a stabbing and, on arrival, found emergency medical technicians treating a 44-year-old woman for a life-threatening injury. That woman was transported in critical condition to Massachusetts General Hospital for emergency surgery. By this morning, the woman’s condition remained critical but had stabilized.

Witnesses in the area provided Winthrop officers with a description of the assailant as a heavyset, white individual of indeterminate gender wearing a mask who fled the scene in a motor vehicle. Witnesses also provided a description of that vehicle and its license plate, which one witness had entered into a cell phone so as not to forget it.

Winthrop Police called in that license plate and relayed it to police in surrounding cities and towns. Revere Police acting on that notice soon observed the vehicle, a blue Hyundai Elantra station wagon, and stopped it near the Everett border. They were assisted by Everett Police.

In light of the serious injury to the victim, Winthrop Police also notified State Police assigned to Conley’s office, who have jurisdiction over death investigations in Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop. The State Police Crime Scene Services Section also responded to assist.

“The witness statements were a tremendous help,” Conley said. “The quick response by Winthrop Police and keen observations of Revere officers led to the arrest of suspects who might otherwise have escaped. This was outstanding work by civilians and police alike.”

Tuck was driving the vehicle. Also inside were Donahue and a 15-year-old female who is not being identified because she is a juvenile. Officers recovered a black ski mask from the vehicle and a knife from Tuck’s person. All three were transported to Winthrop Police headquarters, where the adult females gave statements.

Based on those statements, evidence at the scene and in the suspects’ vehicle, and interviews with other witnesses, Winthrop Police placed Donahue and Tuck in custody. Investigators believe they shared a plan to rob the victim; only Donahue is charged with the stabbing at this time. The investigation into the incident remains active.

Donahue was represented today by attorney Richard Sandman and Tuck was represented by attorney Erica Colombo. Both will return to court on Nov. 29.
