Two Held Without Bail in Recent Unrelated Homicides

Two men were held without bail at their arraignments on unrelated Boston homicides today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JUNIOR FERNANDES (D.O.B. 5/5/89) of Dorchester was formally charged today with the murder and firearms offenses for the shooting death of his former girlfriend, 21-year-old Alessa Castellon, shortly after 3:00 Sunday morning. Assistant District Attorney David Fredette recommended that Fernandes be held without bail; Dorchester District Court Judge Kenneth Desmond granted that request.

Fernandes allegedly shot the young woman during an argument outside a Granger Street apartment building in which his sister lives, then drove away from the scene. He was apprehended later the same morning by Boston Police homicide detectives and allegedly gave a statement acknowledging his responsibility for the shooting.

Conley urged victims of any crime, including domestic violence, to call 911 in an emergency. SafeLink, a statewide DV hotline, can be reached at 877-785-2020. SafeLink is answered by trained advocates 24 hours a day in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, as well as TTY at 877-521-2601. It also has the capacity to provide multilingual translation in more than 140 languages.

Prior to Fredette’s arrival in West Roxbury District Court for the arraignment of LAQUAN MILLER (D.O.B. 5/25/94), the Roslindale man’s attorney waived a bail argument and agreed to have Miller held without bail at least until his next court date. Miller is charged with murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm for the June 5 shooting death of Wilfredo Martinez, 23, and the non-fatal shooting of a second 23-year-old man.

Martinez and the surviving victim were shot repeatedly on Brookway Road in the Archdale housing development at about 10:15 p.m. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene; the second man was rushed in critical condition to Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he underwent life-saving surgery. Miller, sought since late last week for the incident, was apprehended Sunday night by Boston Police.

The investigation into both homicides remains “very active,” Conley said.

Fernandes is represented by attorney James Budreau and will return to court on Aug. 26. Miller is represented by attorney Willie Davis and will return to court on Aug. 23. Michael Schultz is the DA’s victim-witness advocate on both cases.
