Two Held Without Bail in Teen’s Fatal Shooting

BOSTON, May 1, 2017— Two men were ordered held without bail at their arraignment today in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Yanuel Viloria last month, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

MALIK PHILLIPS (D.O.B. 9/23/98) and ROBERT SILVA-PRENTICE (D.O.B. 10/5/97) were arraigned today in Roxbury Municipal Court, charged with Viloria’s April 21 murder.  At the request of Assistant District Attorney Craig Iannini of the DA’s Homicide Unit, Judge David Weingarten ordered that both men be held without bail.

Iannini told the court that security cameras inside 180 Ruggles St. captured a group that included Phillips and Silva enter the building shortly before 9:00 p.m. on April 21 and speak with Viloria, who was seated in the building’s stairwell.  Members of the group walked away and then returned to again interact with Viloria.  Phillips can be seen holding an object believed to be a firearm just prior to the shooting – which occurred outside of the view of cameras – and then placing the object into his clothing as the group flees the building immediately after the shooting, prosecutors said.

Members of the Boston Police Department identified Phillips and Silva in the security camera images.  They were taken into custody Friday night after prosecutors authorized their arrests.

Erin O’Connor is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate.  Phillips is represented by Michael Roitman and Silva-Prentice by Jeffrey Miller.  They return to court June 16.
