Two Held Without Bail, Third Already in Custody, in October Homicide

BOSTON, Dec. 19, 2016—Two men were arraigned today following their arrests Friday for the shooting death of Shawn Borden earlier this year, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

TYSHAWN CUMMINGS (D.O.B. 2/21/95) and JAMARI MANNING (D.O.B. 4/15/95), both of Dorchester, were charged with murder for their roles in the Oct. 18 shooting that claimed the 41-year-old Borden’s life seven days later. At prosecutors’ request, Dorchester Municipal Court Judge James Coffey held both men held without bail. A third defendant, TYSHAWN SANDERS (D.O.B. 1/31/98) of Dorchester, is in custody on unrelated charges and will likely be arraigned tomorrow.

Assistant District Attorney Catherine Ham of the DA’s Homicide Unit told the court that Borden and members of his family were outdoors vacuuming his car that evening when a gunman in a black hooded sweatshirt fired more than a dozen rounds in the direction of the group. Borden was struck and rushed to a hospital, where he died on Oct. 25.

Ham said the investigation that followed revealed that Manning drove to the area in a vehicle he had rented earlier, with Cummings in the front passenger’s seat. Sanders was also in the car, which circled the block just prior to the shooting, Ham said.

Sanders allegedly exited the vehicle, approached the area of Mather Street and Dorchester Avenue, fired on the group, and ran back to the waiting car, in which Manning and Cummings allegedly drove him from the scene. Ham said GPS data, surveillance imagery, and other evidence puts the three men together before and after the shooting. Prosecutors approved warrants charging the three with murder on Dec. 15; the next day, members of the Boston Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit and Youth Violence Strike Force arrested Cummings and Manning and lodged a warrant for Sanders at the Nashua Street Jail, where he is awaiting trial on gun and drug charges stemming from a Nov. 7 arrest.

Cummings was represented by attorney William White and Manning by attorney Frank Spillane. Both will return to court on Jan. 18.
