Unsafe Cycling Leads to Gun Arrest, High Bail

A Dorchester man whose unsafe cycling this weekend caught Boston Police officers’ eyes was held on high bail at his arraignment today for the loaded, unregistered handgun they later found in his jacket, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DEANDRE ZOLLARCOFFER (D.O.B. 6/21/88) was arraigned in Dorchester District Court today on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, and unlawful possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number. Because of prior assault, larceny, and robbery convictions, he was additionally charged as a Level I armed career criminal.

Judge Robert Baylor set bail at $75,000 – the amount recommended by Assistant District Attorney Michael Distefano.

Boston Police on routine patrol Saturday evening spotted Zollarcoffer and another man riding their bicycles against traffic and weaving between cars on Talbot Avenue at about 6:45 p.m. Neither bicycle had lights or reflectors. When they spotted the officers, they allegedly accelerated and sped off.

The officers turned around, caught up with Zollarcoffer and his associate, and stopped them. When asked why he was travelling the wrong way, Zollarcoffer looked away but did not answer. After asking for his identification, one officer noticed a bulge in what appeared to be the shape of a firearm in Zollarcoffer’s jacket pocket.

Zollarcoffer allegedly turned to run but was grabbed from behind by the officer. The officer could feel the object to be a firearm. Once Zollarcoffer was handcuffed, the object was retrieved and found to be a .380 caliber Taurus semiautomatic handgun loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition.

Also recovered from Zollarcoffer’s pockets were a folding knife and a small bag containing what appeared to be marijuana.

Zollarcoffer’s associate was interviewed briefly and released, while Zollarcoffer himself was placed under arrest. He and his bicycle were transported to the District B-3 station; the suspect was booked and the bike was held as property under his name.

Zollarcoffer is represented by the Committee for Public Counsel Services. He will return to court on April 18.
