WELLESLEY WOMAN CHARGED WITH DRIVING AT AND STRIKING STATE TROOPER

A Wellesley woman was arraigned yesterday for allegedly striking a State trooper with her Mercedes as he attempted to write her a ticket, then driving straight toward him and ultimately fleeing the scene as he tried to arrest her, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

MARGARET GREER (D.O.B. 11/7/51) was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon, and failure to stop for police. She was released on her own recognizance and will return to East Boston District Court on May 13.

The incident unfolded Sunday evening at about 8:40 when a trooper directing traffic at Logan Airport observed Greer’s gray Mercedes Benz ML320 idling in a marked bus lane near Terminal B. When the trooper directed her to move the vehicle, she said she was waiting for her husband; when the trooper gave her the option of circling the terminal or waiting in a nearby cell phone lot, she allegedly rolled up her window and ignored him.

The trooper moved to the front of the SUV and began writing her a ticket, at which point Greer allegedly accelerated sharply forward and to the left, striking the trooper with her passenger side mirror. As she stopped for oncoming traffic, the trooper approached the vehicle and opened the driver’s side door while ordering her out. Instead, Greer allegedly drove forward and closed the door.

When she stopped for traffic again, the trooper walked to the front of the SUV and told her to put the vehicle in park. Greer allegedly accelerated directly toward the trooper, forcing him to run backward for about 15 feet before he was able to jump away toward the driver’s side. Once again, the trooper opened her door and ordered her out, this time reaching inside and attempting to unfasten her seat belt.

Greer allegedly sped away from the terminal at this point, dragging the trooper a short distance. After releasing the vehicle, he broadcast the car’s description and plate number. Additional State Police units later stopped Greer on the Massachusetts Turnpike near the Columbus Avenue overpass, noting that her passenger’s side mirror – which had allegedly struck the trooper earlier – was still folded in toward the body of the vehicle.

In the brief conversation that followed, Greer allegedly denied having been at the airport that day. She allegedly told troopers that she was driving home from her job at Merrill Lynch in downtown Boston. The trooper she allegedly struck arrived at the scene, identified her, and placed her under arrest.

At booking, Greer allegedly refused to answer any questions regarding her use of alcohol or drugs and refused to assist in a mandatory suicide prevention inquiry.

In the aftermath of the incident, multiple independent civilian witnesses contacted the Logan Airport State Police Barracks unbidden to offer statements regarding their perceptions of the attempted arrest.

One, a bus driver, said she was right next to the SUV when Greer “drove away with the door open, dragging the trooper …. I had about sixty people on my bus. They were terrified by what they saw. My legs are still shaking.”

A Newburyport man who had just flown in from Dallas said he watched as the trooper went to the front of Greer’s SUV “with his hands extended, shouting for the woman to stop. She proceeded to push the trooper back about 15 feet while the trooper continued to yell ‘stop’ …. She kept the car in gear and shouted repeatedly ‘I’m not stopping the car, get away from me’ …. Then she gunned the engine and took off.”
