BOSTON, Feb. 13, 2013—Winthrop Police detectives and State Police assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office today arrested a Winthrop man for allegedly possessing and distributing child pornography.

WILLIAM A. KROTT III (D.O.B. 10/29/82) is expected to be arraigned tomorrow in East Boston District Court.

Krott’s arrest came as the result of an investigation that began late last year when an individual displayed images of suspected child pornography during an online chat session. The chat host’s monitoring system captured a still image from that session and forwarded it to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s CyberTip program.

The NCMEC tip was in turn relayed to the Suffolk DA’s office, which used an administrative subpoena to obtain the internet protocol address associated with the display of child pornography. That IP address led investigators to Krott’s Quincy Avenue home.

Today, Winthrop Police and State Police – along with Revere Police, who also lent their assistance – executed a search warrant at that location. On Krott’s personal computer, they recovered multiple images of children in sexualized contexts.

Under Massachusetts law, possessing child pornography carries up to five years in state prison. Distributing child pornography carries up to 20 years in state prison.
