YOUTH, 15, HELD ON QUARTER-MILLION BAIL FOR ALLEGEDLY SHOOTING WOMAN IN FACE

A Dorchester teen was held on a quarter-million dollars’ cash bail yesterday following his arraignment on multiple attempted murder charges, including one incurred when he allegedly shot a 22-year-old woman in the face Friday night, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

The 15-YEAR-OLD JUVENILE, whose name is not being released because of his age, was arraigned in the juvenile session of Dorchester District Court on four counts of armed assault with intent to murder; three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; and single counts of assault and battery, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawfully discharging a weapon within 500’ of a building.

Acting on a recommendation by members of Conley’s Senior Trial Unit, Judge Robert Murray set bail at $250,000. A 17-year-old co-defendant, BRIAN HEMINGWAY (D.O.B. 8/23/92) of Dorchester, was held on $25,000 cash at his arraignment for assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Conley said.

Boston Police arrested the boy Saturday in the course of an investigation that Conley said was “still very active.” Evidence developed thus far suggests that the shooting victim, two of her adult female friends, and a five-year-old child were walking through Franklin Field shortly before 8:00 when the juvenile, accompanied by another man, approached them and struck a 24-year-old victim in the face.

Another victim attempted to intervene on her behalf. The juvenile and Hemenway allegedly threw her to the ground and beat her before retreating to the Franklin Field Housing Development. Moments later, as the victims stood on Stratton Street, the juvenile allegedly returned and fired multiple shots at them, including the one that struck the 22-year-old victim.

“By the grace of God, none of those rounds struck the child,” Conley said.

The shooting victim remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the Boston Medical Center, Conley said, but is expected to survive her injuries.

“Even after two arrests, a case like this leaves us only with questions,” Conley said. “Who would give a 15-year-old boy a loaded gun? Why would he beat a woman and then shoot her? And how on earth did he come to think this was acceptable behavior?”

The juvenile will return to court on Oct. 6 with attorney Scott Rankin. Hemenway will return to court on Oct. 13 with attorney Jeffrey Chapdelaine.
