Youth, 18, Held in April Homicide

BOSTON, May 18, 2012—A Dorchester teenager was held without bail on a murder charge stemming from the April 27 shooting death of 25-year-old Mariano Malave in Jamaica Plain, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

CHARLES REDDICKS (D.O.B. 4/20/94) was arraigned this afternoon in West Roxbury District Court following his arrest this morning by Boston Police homicide detectives amid the ongoing investigation into Malave’s homicide inside his Hyde Park Avenue residence.

Assistant District Attorney Daniel Mulhern, the chief of Conley’s Gang Unit, said the arrest was based on “witness statements, cellular and telephonic records, and video evidence” that suggests Malave was shot in the course of a large drug transaction.

“On April 27, during the course of the day, the defendant Mr. Reddicks was in the process of negotiating the purchase of a pound of marijuana from Mr. Malave,” Mulhern said. “The location of the purchase was 132 Hyde Park Ave. In the course of the transaction, the defendant fired multiple shots, killing Mr. Malave.”

In the aftermath of the shooting, Reddicks fled in a motor vehicle that Mulhern said was “linked to” his Millett Street address and his grandmother.

In addition to being held without bail on the murder charge, Reddick’s bail on an unrelated shooting case was revoked. In that case, prosecutors say, Reddicks shot an 18-year-old male in the arm from the passenger’s seat of a moving car on Dec. 1, 2011. That shooting is believed to have been in retaliation for an earlier physical altercation. The victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Reddicks was arraigned in the Boston Municipal Court the next day, when prosecutors asked that he be held on $7,500 bail. His bail was set at $5,000. His next court date on the shooting is June 5 and his next date on the homicide is June 20. He is represented by attorney Rosemary Scappicchio.
