Youth Charged in Violent Beating While Free on Bail

A Dorchester teen’s bail for a violent South Boston attack has been revoked after he was charged with another beating that sent a man to the hospital this weekend, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DERECK McCANN (D.O.B. 5/24/93) was arraigned this morning in South Boston District Court on charges of assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for allegedly beating and kicking a 28-year-old South Boston man unconscious early Saturday morning.

Assistant District Attorney Luke Goldworm recommended that McCann’s bail be set at $50,000 cash and that his open bail on an earlier assault case be revoked. Goldworm also recommended that McCann be ordered to wear a GPS monitoring device, stay away from the victim and any witnesses in the case, and abide by a 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew seven nights a week while his case is open. South Boston District Court Judge Michael Bolden granted all of those requests.

McCann is currently under Suffolk Superior Court indictment for allegedly attacking two South Boston men during the early morning hours of May 8. In that incident, McCann and three others allegedly kicked and beat two men near the intersection of East Broadway and I Street, seriously injuring both victims, while shouting “Get out of Southie.”

At their district court arraignment for those violent attacks, Suffolk prosecutors recommended that McCann and his co-defendants – SEAN KELLEY (D.O.B. 3/22/93) of Charlestown, DANIEL LYNCH (D.O.B. 6/19/92) of South Boston, KEVIN McCARTHY, Jr. (D.O.B. 12/2/92) of South Boston, and KEVIN RULL, Jr. (D.O.B. 3/29/93) of South Boston – be held on $10,000 cash bail. Their bails were set at $1,000.

In the most recent beating, McCann is alleged to have been one of a group of males who approached and attacked a lone 28-year-old South Boston man shortly before 2:15 Saturday morning. That man was transported to Tufts Medical Center with serious head injuries that required metal staples to close.

Based on multiple witness statements, responding Boston Police stopped McCann near the scene. McCann was allegedly seen running from the area of the attack and had blood on his outer clothing and his sneakers; Boston Police arrested him and seized his clothing for testing.

McCann will return to South Boston District Court on Dec. 20 and Suffolk Superior Court on Dec. 12. He is represented by attorney Daniel DiLorati.
