A Mattapan man was held on high bail at his Dorchester District Court arraignment this afternoon on charges that he shot and seriously injured a 31-year-old man, nearly killing him, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

LEONARD YOUNG (D.O.B. 6/27/78) was charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, carrying a loaded firearm, and two additional firearms-related counts charged as second and subsequent offenses – carrying a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition – for his alleged role in today’s shooting. more »

An admitted serial rapist today pleaded guilty to three 1991 rapes, including one for which an innocent man was wrongly convicted, ending a case that revolutionized the ways eyewitness identifications are gathered in Suffolk County and DNA evidence is used in Massachusetts, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

Assistant District Attorney Leora Joseph recommended three consecutive state prison terms of 20 to 25 years for JERRY DIXON (D.O.B. 4/19/73) for the rapes of three different women in March, April, and July of 1991. Suffolk Superior Court Judge Carol Ball imposed three consecutive terms of 10 years each. more »

An Everett man was sentenced to state prison yesterday after admitting to carrying a loaded handgun in his backpack down a Savin Hill street last year, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Charles Hely sentenced DEONDRAE FORBES (D.O.B. 12/6/85) to three year behind bars followed by 18 months of probation, the terms recommended by Assistant District Attorney Melissa Brooks of Conley’s Major Felony Bureau. Forbes pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm. more »

A Mattapan woman remains held on high bail today after her Superior Court arraignment on charges that she ran down a 6-year-old boy in April, nearly killing him, before fleeing the scene and telling friends to lie on her behalf, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

SHANIQUA NELSON (D.O.B. 3/12/92) was indicted July 12 by the Suffolk County Grand Jury, moving her case from district court to Suffolk Superior Court, where it will be adjudicated. Nelson was indicted on charges of leaving the scene of an accident causing personal injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and violating the state’s witness intimidation law, all in connection with the April 18 incident on Delhi Street. more »

A suburban couple’s night at a downtown bar ended in a police station lock-up after they punched, bit, and pulled a knife on three victims, including a Boston Police officer, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office said in court this week.

JOHNATHAN COLLERAN (D.O.B. 6/18/82) and JENNA CIAMPA (D.O.B. 5/30/84), both of Stoneham, were arraigned in the Boston Municipal Court yesterday for their alleged actions on State Street early Sunday morning. Colleran was charged with three counts of assault and battery as well as single counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest. Ciampa was charged with assault and battery on a public employee. more »

A twice-convicted killer free during his second successful appeal had his bail revoked this morning for a beating and robbery attempt over the weekend, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.
JOSEPH DOWNEY (D.O.B. 4/18/65) of Quincy was arraigned today in South Boston District Court on charges of assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and attempted unarmed robbery for the July 23 incident inside a family member’s residence.

Assistant District Attorney Luke Goldworm recommended that Downey be held on $10,000 cash bail and that he be ordered to wear a GPS monitoring device, stay away from the victim and witnesses, and stay out of South Boston while the case is open. Goldworm also recommended that Downey’s open bail on his pending murder case be revoked. Judge Michael Bolden set bail at $5,000 cash, imposed all of the prosecutor’s recommended conditions, and revoked Downey’s open bail. more »

Two men were held without bail at their arraignments on unrelated Boston homicides today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JUNIOR FERNANDES (D.O.B. 5/5/89) of Dorchester was formally charged today with the murder and firearms offenses for the shooting death of his former girlfriend, 21-year-old Alessa Castellon, shortly after 3:00 Sunday morning. Assistant District Attorney David Fredette recommended that Fernandes be held without bail; Dorchester District Court Judge Kenneth Desmond granted that request. more »

A twice-convicted drunk driver was allegedly intoxicated again last week and driving with a suspended license when he struck a bicyclist stopped in a crosswalk and then hit the Boston Police officer who pulled him over, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Neither the 28-year-old female cyclist nor the Boston Police officer assigned to District 4 was seriously injured by VINODKUMAR PATEL (D.O.B. 10/16/52) of Jamaica Plain during the July 21 incident at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Boylston Street. Assistant District Attorney Christopher Henry recommended that Patel be held on $5000 at his arraignment Friday; Boston Municipal Court Judge Edward Redd released Patel on his own recognizance. more »

A North End man’s exuberance over a winning lottery scratch ticket was his undoing when his arrest for jumping on a stranger’s car and denting the hood led police to a sandwich bag full of marijuana in his pocket, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSEPH TAGLIERI (D.O.B. 12/12/79) was released on his own recognizance today following his arraignment in the Boston Municipal Court on charges of destruction of property and possession of more than an ounce of a Class D substance. A convicted rapist living in Chelsea under a New Yorker’s identity allegedly pointed a gun at a woman’s head, stripped naked and shot an elderly man three times, threatened to kill a neighbor, and tried to carjack two more victims before fleeing the area and being arrested by a Braintree SWAT team earlier this month, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSEPH RABINOVICH, was arraigned yesterday on charges of armed assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault and battery, identity fraud, failure to register as a sex offender, four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of armed carjacking, and a slew of weapons offenses for the bizarre and violent series of events on Fifth Street throughout July 2. more »

The shooting death of 27-year-old Paul Fagan last year was the result of an “ongoing feud” between warring gangs, a Suffolk County homicide prosecutor said today.

KARL PRESCOTT (D.O.B. 1/18/83) and YONAS TEWOLDE (D.O.B. 7/5/82), both of Roxbury, were arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court this morning on charges of first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm for their alleged roles in Fagan’s May 2, 2010 homicide. more »

An alleged serial rapist identified in three brutal 1991 sexual assaults – including one for which an innocent man was wrongly convicted – is scheduled to appear in Suffolk Superior Court this afternoon, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JERRY DIXON (D.O.B. 4/19/73) of Dorchester is expected to appear in connection with a pending case charging him with multiple counts of aggravated rape for the attacks on March 20, 1991, in a wooded area off Townsend Street in Roxbury; on April 24, 1991, near the Academy Homes housing development in Roxbury; and on July 13, 1991, near Amory Street in Jamaica Plain. more »

A scooter operator charged with smashing a motorist’s window is now also a victim after the motorist’s husband allegedly beat him with his own helmet, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

A second man charged in connection with the fatal 2009 shooting of 36-year-old Tyrone Smith pleaded guilty today, accepting more than 20 years in prison rather than face trial, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DARYL PULLEN (D.O.B. 6/20/88) pleaded guilty to manslaughter, assault, and weapons charges for taking part in the Jan. 7, 2009, shooting that left Smith dead in the foyer of a relative’s home. The man who fired the fatal shots, TREVON MASON (D.O.B. 12/30/87), is currently serving a life term for his role in the same incident. more »

A Dorchester man was held on $100,000 cash bail today following his arraignment on charges that he shot a one-time friend in the chest, killing him, during a fight at an MBTA station earlier this year, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Assistant District Attorney Holly Broadbent for the first time today said that NHU NGUYEN (D.O.B. 5/5/92) was once friends with 19-year-old Derek Matulina, the man he allegedly shot to death at Savin Hill station on May 7, but the two became involved in an ongoing dispute over money Nguyen believed Matulina owed him from a drug transaction. more »

A second suspect has been charged in an apparent drug-related home invasion on Sewell Street last month, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

MICHAEL FINKLEA (D.O.B. 12/9/90) of Mission Hill was arraigned yesterday in West Roxbury District Court on charges of home invasion, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon – specifically a glass bong – and unlawful possession of a firearm. Prosecutors recommended that he be held on $5,000 cash bail; Judge Patricia Bernstein set bail at $2,500. more »

The suspect in an early-morning stabbing told police that he was carrying a knife, but not the one he used to stab a man on LaGrange Street, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JAMES N. RANDOLPH (D.O.B. 6/27/60), who has no fixed address, was arraigned in the Boston Municipal Court this morning on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for allegedly stabbing a 53-year-old Mattapan man at about 2:40 this morning. Assistant District Attorney Katherine Powell recommended that he be held on $50,000 cash bail; Judge Edward Redd adopted that recommendation. more »

A Dorchester man already convicted of one armed robbery has been indicted for another for an incident in which he tried to rob a local business with a hammer, only to be shot by the store’s owner, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

RAYMOND SIMS (D.O.B. 2/2/64) was arraigned today in Suffolk Superior Court following his June 21 indictment by the Suffolk County Grand Jury for armed robbery while masked. The indictment charges Sims, who was previously convicted in the same court in 2007, as a second or subsequent offender. more »

State Police detectives assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office are investigating a collision that claimed the life of a motorcycle rider in Hyde Park this afternoon.

State Police and emergency medical technicians responded to the four-way intersection of Dedham, Enneking, and Turtle Pond parkways at about 4:30 p.m. for a report of a motor vehicle collision. A 45-year-old Hyde Park man who had been riding a motorcycle on Turtle Pond Parkway was suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Faulkner Hospital, where he was pronounced dead of his injuries. more »

A Dorchester man was held without bail on a murder charge stemming from the shooting death last month of 25-year-old Aaron Wornum in Dorchester, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.
Assistant District Attorney David Fredette of Conley’s Homicide Unit today recommended that ANTHONY ROBERTSON (D.O.B. 5/19/91) be held without bail pending trial; Dorchester District Court Judge Rosalind Miller granted that request.

Fredette told the court that the victim and defendant were known to one another. Phone records obtained by investigators suggest the victim was on his cell phone just before the June 26 shooting, Fredette said, and additional investigation has linked the other phone to the defendant. more »

A Winthrop man with seven prior convictions for drunk driving is being held without bail following his arraignment this week on his eighth such case, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office this week ensured that a Revere man will remain behind bars pending his trial on charges that he fired at least six shots at an ex-girlfriend’s home.

Assistant District Attorney Brenna Flynn yesterday convinced East Boston District Court Judge Roberto Ronquillo, Jr., that KOSHIN ABDULLAHI (D.O.B. 9/11/74) poses too great a threat to be released on bail in a case charging him with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, and assault with a dangerous weapon. Abdullah was first arraigned on those charges July 6; Flynn led a hearing yesterday under the state’s so-called dangerousness statute. more »

A Revere man beat his then-girlfriend’s child so badly that he may suffer permanent disabilities, then violated a restraining order by calling the mother more than a dozen times in the middle of the night, Suffolk County District County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s top child abuse prosecutor said today.

JOSEPH TESTA (D.O.B. 5/19/82) was indicted July 5 on charges of assault and battery on a child causing bodily injury, assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury, aggravated assault and battery, child endangerment, and violation of a restraining order. The indictments move Testa’s case from Chelsea District Court, where he was previously arraigned, to Suffolk Superior Court, where it will be adjudicated. more »

The man who stabbed 22-year-old Beau James Youngs to death during a fight outside a Boylston Street pharmacy pleaded guilty today, accepting up to 10 years in prison rather than face trial tomorrow, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

KEVIN JAMES (D.O.B. 11/1/66), a.k.a. KEVIN WILSON, pleaded guilty to the indicted charge of manslaughter the day before jury selection was scheduled to begin in his trial. Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Hickman of Conley’s Homicide Unit recommended a term of 10 to 12 years; Suffolk Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Donovan imposed a term of eight to 10 years. more »

A Dorchester man admitted his role the deadly ambush that killed 36-year-old Tyrone Smith, permanently injured his female cousin, and could have killed her 8-year-old son in the foyer of a Stanwood Street building two years ago, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

TREVON MASON (D.O.B. 12/30/87) pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and firearms offenses for the Jan. 7, 2009, incident. He was sentenced to the mandatory term for that offense, life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. Mason had initially been charged with first-degree murder. more »

The Roslindale man charged with running down 23-year-old Andrew Prior was so drunk after attending a rock concert that he later said he couldn’t believe a valet gave him back his keys, a Suffolk County prosecutor said today at his arraignment on motor vehicle homicide charges.

COLIN RATIU (D.O.B. 11/27/87) was formally charged in Suffolk Superior Court this afternoon with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident causing death. The lead charge supersedes an earlier district court complaint charging him with motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation. more »

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley today invited non-profit organizations that work with kids and teens to apply for his annual series of cash awards that provide the young people of Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop with constructive alternatives to crime and drug use.

The annual funds, which total $50,000 this year, are disbursed from Conley’s Asset Forfeiture Reinvestment Program. The program takes cash and assets seized from drug dealers and awards them to Suffolk County organizations that help young people avoid drugs, gangs, and other risky activity. more »

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley today announced upgraded charges against a Roslindale man charged with killing 23-year-old Andrew Prior in a collision on Tremont Street last year.

The Suffolk County Grand Jury on June 27 returned indictments charging COLIN RATIU (D.O.B. 11/27/87) with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident causing death. Ratiu is expected to be arraigned on those charges in the Magistrate’s Session of Suffolk Superior Court at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. more »

A Mattapan woman already facing serious motor vehicle offenses was arraigned today for allegedly running down a child and fleeing the scene while free on bail in the earlier case, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

SHANIQUA NELSON (D.O.B. 3/12/92) was taken into custody on multiple new charges today at Dorchester District Court, where she had been scheduled to appear in connection with a March case alleging three counts of leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, and single counts of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, operating with a suspended license, and resisting arrest. more »

The mother and sister of Paula Castillo, murdered just days after her 18th birthday, told a packed courtroom today that they carry no hatred for the man who shot her to death, but that they still feel anger and deep sadness that her life was cut so short.

“The justice that Paula’s family found in a courtroom is no compensation for everything they lost,” Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said. “But even through their grief, they showed grace, dignity, and strength. A Lynn man was held on $25,000 cash bail today following his arraignment for allegedly stabbing two men in Boston’s South End late last night, sending both to area hospitals, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSE R. SORIANO (D.O.B. 2/23/91) was charged this morning in Boston Municipal Court with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for allegedly stabbing two Cambridge men, one 22 and the other 26, on Huntington Avenue shortly before 11:30 p.m. Special Assistant District Attorney Sarah Solomon recommended that Soriano be held on $250,000 cash bail; Judge Annette Forde set bail at $25,000. more »

A Cambridge man’s open bail was revoked and new bail was set at $50,000 following his arraignment for allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman near the Charles River after meeting her in Harvard Square last night, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSEPH LEE BROWN (D.O.B. 6/22/89), who also goes by the name “Vocals,” was arraigned this morning in Brighton District Court on a rape charge stemming from the attack, which occurred in the area of Soldier’s Field Road near the John W. Weeks Footbridge. more »

A Suffolk Superior Court jury late this afternoon convicted three men in connection with the 2009 shooting death of 18-year-old Paula Castillo as she leaned out of the window of a Hyde Park home, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

Jurors convicted RUBEN SANCHEZ (D.O.B. 9/6/90), a Hyde Park man, of second-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and carrying a loaded firearm. Likewise, they convicted both MIGUEL VASQUEZ (D.O.B. 5/5/91) of Boston’s South End and ANDRES BREA (D.O.B. 1/25/90) of Roxbury of unlawful possession of a firearm and carrying a loaded firearm; jurors acquitted Vasquez of a third charge of assault by means of a dangerous weapon, and deadlocked on a count charging Brea with accessory after the fact to assault by means of a dangerous weapon. more »
