An East Boston man tried to cover up his involvement in the collision that killed 22-year-old Sothany Pen in Revere yesterday morning, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office charged in court today.

JON RAVIDA (D.O.B. 3/20/64) is charged with motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of an accident causing death for the incident on Route 1A at about 5:50 yesterday morning. Assistant District Attorney Megan O’Rourke of Conley’s Major Felony Bureau recommended that he be held on $50,000 cash bail; Chelsea District Court Judge James Wexler set bail at $25,000 and ordered that Ravida neither leave the Commonwealth without the court’s permission nor operate a motor vehicle while the case is pending. more »

An East Boston man is in custody this afternoon, charged with motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of the collision that killed 22-year-old Sothany Pen this morning, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

JON RAVIDA (D.O.B. 3/20/64) was taken into custody by Revere Police detectives and State Police homicide detectives assigned to Conley’s office following statements he made during an interview at Revere Police Headquarters. Investigators believe he was the operator of the dark, late-model Ford Explorer that struck Pen on Lee Burbank Highway at about 5:50 this morning. more »

A Revere woman was struck and killed by a motor vehicle early this morning in a hit-and-run collision under investigation by Revere Police and State Police homicide detectives assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office.

The preliminary investigation suggests that Sothany Pen, 22, was crossing Lee Burbank Highway from east to west when she was struck by a motor vehicle travelling northbound at about 5:50 this morning. Pen suffered grievous injuries in the collision; the motor vehicle left the scene. more »

State Police, Chelsea Police, and Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office continue to investigate a fatal hit-and-run in Chelsea just before 12:30 a.m.

The victim of the collision, a pedestrian, has been identified as a 39-year-old Chelsea resident. His name is not being released until his next of kin – believed to reside outside the Commonwealth – can be contacted. more »

Special agents of the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General today recognized a Suffolk County fraud prosecutor for his role in convicting a serial scammer, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

A Randolph man has been charged with manslaughter for the fatal stabbing of 29-year-old Andrew Wyman during an altercation on Massachusetts Avenue this spring, Suffolk County District attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

DARRELL MITCHELL (D.O.B. 3/13/87) was indicted for Wyman’s slaying on Aug. 12 and arraigned this morning in Suffolk Superior Court. Acting on a request by Assistant District Attorney Dana Pierce of Conley’s Senior Trial Unit, Clerk Magistrate Connie Wong kept in place the $250,000 cash bail imposed at Mitchell’s district court arraignment on a murder charge. more »

A Dorchester man convicted yesterday of his second firearms offense faces a mandatory state prison term when he’s sentenced tomorrow, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

A Suffolk Superior Court jury yesterday found DARREN DYETTE (D.O.B. 8/2/89) of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm. At a second set of proceedings following the trial, Dyette admitted that he was the same individual convicted of those offenses in 2008, making him a second or subsequent offender and exposing him to a three-year minimum for his latest conviction. more »

An East Boston man said he only grabbed a stranger’s gold necklace because he was an expectant father with money woes, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office charged in court today.

MARQUIS ALLEN (D.O.B. 2/8/90) was arraigned this morning in East Boston District Court on an unarmed robbery charge stemming from an incident on Marion Street yesterday. Prosecutors recommended that he be held on $5,000 cash bail; Judge Roberto Ronquillo, Jr., set bail at $1,500 but granted prosecutors’ request that he be ordered to stay away from the victim while the case is pending. more »

A friend of the man slain on Sumner Street early yesterday morning was held without bail today after being charged with a single count of murder, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

LESTER JAMES (D.O.B. 11/14/86) was arraigned in Dorchester District Court for the stabbing death of 23-year-old Francis Kargbo shortly after midnight on Aug. 23. Judge Robert Baylor granted prosecutors’ requests and ordered James held without bail. more »

A Jamaica Plain man was held on high bail after a routine inquiry by Boston Police prompted him to run away and toss a loaded handgun with an obliterated serial number, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

KRISTOPHER JORDAN (D.O.B. 10/11/86) was arraigned yesterday in Dorchester District Court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, and trespassing. more »

State Police assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office and the Brighton barracks are investigating a single-vehicle crash that left two men with grievous injuries this morning.

At about 4:15 a.m., State troopers responded to the area of Storrow Drive eastbound near the off-ramp to Kenmore Square to find a white Infinity engulfed in flames on the median strip, where it had collided with a tree. Troopers attempted to remove its occupants – a 27-year-old driver and his 29-year-old brother, both North Andover men – but were unable to do so. more »

A 54-year-old man who was arraigned today in the Boston Municipal Court and held on high bail on charges that he robbed a Beacon Street bank yesterday evening, allegedly paid his hotel bill in cash following the robbery, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

PATRICK CANNON (D.O.B. 10/29/56) was charged with masked and armed robbery for his alleged role in yesterday’s heist from the Cambridge Trust Bank. Assistant District Attorney Ryan Mingo told the court that there is a federal detainer for Cannon, who was out on parole for a prior armed bank robbery conviction when he committed the most recent offense. Municipal Court Judge Edward Redd imposed a cash bail in the amount of $750,000. more »

A Roxbury man was arraigned for drunk driving today, more than 20 years after he was arrested by Metropolitan Police for allegedly drifting across three lanes of traffic in what was then known as the Dewey Square Tunnel, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

RICHARD MATTHEWS (D.O.B. 9/12/42) was charged in Charlestown District Court with operating under the influence, operating without a license, concealing the identity of his vehicle by attaching another car’s plates to it, and operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, all for actions in the early morning hours of Jan. 12, 1989. He was released on his own recognizance after being ordered to appear by Roxbury court personnel who discovered the case during an Aug. 12 hearing on an unrelated case. more »

A Dorchester man’s open bail was revoked after he allegedly robbed a Mattapan home at gunpoint, shot the resident, and got caught with trafficking weight cocaine, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

CHRISTOPHER N. FREEMAN (D.O.B. 12/20/68), whose adult criminal record spans eight pages and dates back to 1986, was arraigned yesterday in Dorchester District Court on charges of home invasion, armed robbery, armed assault with intent to murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, trafficking in cocaine, and three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm. more »

A Randolph man’s quest for a scooter ended when he was robbed at gunpoint, but the alleged mastermind of the incident was identified and charged after the victim told police, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSHUA “JEL” MIRANDA (D.O.B. 1/11/91) of Quincy was arraigned in Dorchester District Court yesterday on charges of armed robbery, witness intimidation, and threatening to commit a crime for the incident earlier this month. Assistant District Attorney Brendan Cox recommended that he be held on $7500 cash bail; Judge Kenneth Desmond set bail at $2500 and ordered Miranda to have no contact with the victim.
At Cox’ request, Desmond also ordered Miranda’s attorney not to provide the defendant with any information that could be used to locate or contact the victim. more »

An East Boston man has been charged with taking part in a brutal beating and stabbing near the entrance to the Sumner Tunnel last week, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ANTHONY LEMUS (D.O.B. 5/5/92) was arraigned Friday in East Boston District Court on charges of armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for the Aug. 10 mob attack on a 21-year-old East Boston man. Assistant District Attorney Erik Bennett recommended that Lemus be held on $50,000 cash bail; Judge Roberto Ronquillo, Jr., set bail at $25,000. more »

Two Dorchester men are in custody on gun charges and a variety of other offenses after allegedly leading Boston Police on a motor vehicle chase during which they tossed two handguns from car, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

NORBERTO BARRETO (D.O.B. 5/27/80) and ARKIE SWINSON (D.O.B. 11/11/80) were arraigned today in Roxbury District Court on two counts each of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Because of a 2005 gun conviction, Barreto is charged as a second or subsequent offender; because of a 2009 drug distribution conviction, Swinson is charged as an armed career criminal. more »

At 2:52 a.m. today Boston University Police requested State Police respond to Commonwealth Avenue at Deerfield Street, where a man reported to a BU officer that he believed a woman had been sexually assaulted on the Esplanade earlier in the night. All patrols from the State Police Barracks at Leverett Circle in Boston responded.

The man told troopers that he came across a woman in the general area of Massachusetts Avenue who told him she had been sexually assaulted on the Esplanade and thrown into the Charles River. The woman, later identified as a 20-year-old student at a local college, was no longer with the man when troopers arrived, but the man still had her purse; troopers used its contents to obtain her current address. more »

The Winthrop resident accused of stabbing a man in the heart, killing him, and leaving the remains beneath his Winthrop Street porch was held without bail at his arraignment this morning, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Assistant District Attorney Ursula Knight of Conley’s Homicide Unit told East Boston District Court Judge Roberto Ronquillo, Jr., that JOHN LACOY (D.O.B. 2/9/64) had “a volatile relationship” with the victim prior to the homicide, which is believed to have taken place in the bedroom of Lacoy’s apartment at 429 Winthrop St. more than a week ago. more »

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty today announced an arrest in the death of a man whose remains were discovered beneath a Winthrop Street porch earlier this week.

Winthrop Police and State Police homicide detectives assigned to Conley’s office took JOHN LACOY (D.O.B. 2/9/64) into custody at Winthrop Police Headquarters this afternoon. more »

The Brighton man shot to death in his own apartment was identified in court today as 78-year-old William Thomas, and his alleged killer was held without bail after his arraignment today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

RANDY FLOYD MOORE (D.O.B. 11/13/56), a resident of the same building in which Thomas was shot dead, was formally charged in Brighton District Court with Thomas’ murder and two counts of armed assault with intent to murder for allegedly firing on Boston Police officers during the standoff that followed. more »

A Mission Hill woman who allegedly shook her 3-year-old daughter violently at a bus stop and then pushed her to the ground was arraigned on an assault and battery charge in the Boston Municipal Court today.
Prosecutors recommended $2000 cash bail be set for YAN FAN ZHU (D.O.B. 12/4/66), further recommending that she be ordered to comply with whatever parenting plans or instructions are provided by the Department of Children and Families and check in weekly with the Department of Probation.

Judge Raymond Dougan, Jr., released Zhu on her own recognizance, declining to order Zhu to abide by any instructions from DCF and declining to order her to check in with Probation. Dougan did order Zhu not to abuse her daughter. more »

A man already convicted of selling counterfeit movies at one coffee shop found himself under arrest again after attempting the same offense at another coffee shop last week, Suffolk County District attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JIANFU HUANG (D.O.B. 10/8/54), formerly of Quincy but now a resident of Corona, New York, was arraigned Friday on charges of distributing a counterfeit mark – the same offense to which he pleaded guilty earlier this year. South Boston District Court Judge Michael Bolden set bail at $500 cash, the amount recommended by Assistant District Attorney Kate Clayman. Huang was also surrendered for violating the terms of his probation on the earlier case. more »

A Dorchester youth will spend at least 2½ years behind bars and possibly as many as five following his conviction for repeatedly firing a handgun near a park crowded with young children, Suffolk county District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

A Boston Municipal Court jury on Friday convicted MICHAEL BROWNE (D.O.B. 2/9/93) of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, unlawfully discharging a firearm within 500’ of a building, and disorderly conduct. more »

Winthrop Police and State Police homicide detectives assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office are investigating an unattended death near a Winthrop Street residence this evening.

Winthrop Police responded to the area of 429 Winthrop St. at about 2:30 this afternoon for a report of a strong odor. On arrival, they observed what appeared to be human remains. Winthrop Police then notified the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit, which investigates all unattended deaths in Chelsea, Revere, Winthrop, and parts of Boston. more »

The state’s highest courts today affirmed the convictions of an East Boston man who killed and set fire to a neighborhood cat and a Dorchester man who stored an unregistered handgun in a secret compartment within his girlfriend’s car, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

“These were serious offenses that drew a great deal of community interest,” Conley said. “We owed it to the people of those communities not just to ensure that the evidence would support a conviction, but also that our work at trial would withstand the scrutiny of our appellate courts.” more »

The Massachusetts Appeals Court today affirmed the convictions of a Hyde Park man who may have shot himself shot himself in the leg but, when interviewed by Boston Police, blamed an unknown assailant, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

The Appeals Court upheld PATRICK FORTUNA’s convictions for misleading a police officer with the intent to impede an investigation and making a false report of a crime, offenses of which he was found guilty at a 2009 jury trial in West Roxbury District Court. He received a one-year suspended sentence. The decision makes clear that a defendant has no reasonable expectation of privacy with regard to clothing cut off of him in a hospital emergency room and clarifies the laws surrounding false statements to police investigators. more »

A Chelsea man was arrested Sunday on a four-year-old warrant and formally charged yesterday for the attempted rape of a family friend, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSE LUIS LOBO (D.O.B. 12/3/84) was arraigned yesterday in Chelsea District Court on a complaint charging him with assault with intent to rape, indecent assault and battery, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Assistant District Attorney Mordecai Morgan recommended that he be held on $7500 cash bail; Judge James LaMothe set bail at $750. more »

State Police detectives assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash early this morning on Storrow Drive in Boston.

Detectives responded at about 1:20 this morning to the westbound portion of the roadway near the Bowker Overpass, where two men were ejected from a GMC Sierra. The passenger in that vehicle, a 22-year-old Needham man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The operator, also 22 of Needham, was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit with life-threatening injuries. more »

A pair of alleged thieves weren’t interested in the bag lunch they stole from one victim, but they kept the bag of cigars they snatched from another – at least until MBTA Transit Police showed up, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOHN GLENNON (D.O.B. 11/20/77), who gave his address as the St. Francis House shelter on Boylston Street, and MALCOLM WILLIAMS (D.O.B. 3/26/93), who has no fixed address, were arraigned in the Boston Municipal Court this morning on two counts each of assault with intent to rob a person 60 or older and assault and battery on a person 60 or over. more »

A sightless, mentally ill Brighton man was committed to a secure psychiatric facility today after a judge agreed with prosecution and defense experts that he was not criminally responsible for the fatal stabbing of 56-year-old Terri Werner, a teacher he knew through a local school for the blind.

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Geraldine Hines ordered LUIS MARQUEZ (D.O.B. 9/15/81) to a 40-day observation period at Bridgewater State Hospital after finding him not criminally responsible on a single count of second-degree murder. The charge arose out of Werner’s June 10, 2008, homicide inside Marquez’ Nonantum Street apartment. Prosecutors expect to seek his continued commitment to Bridgewater at a Sept. 16 status date. more »

A latent fingerprint on a handgun tossed from a moving SUV led a Dorchester gang associate to plead guilty and accept a state prison term rather than go to trial, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JAMAINE BURTON (D.O.B. 9/21/89), affiliated with gangs in the Lucerne and Mascot street areas, pleaded guilty Tuesday to being a Level I armed career criminal for unlawfully possessing a loaded handgun during the 2010 incident, and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon for driving a sport-utility vehicle at Boston and State police. Burton was convicted in 2008 of unlawful possession of a firearm and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. more »

A Dorchester man who served three years in prison on gun and drug charges is back behind bars after being caught with a second unregistered firearm and more than two dozen retail-ready bags of crack cocaine, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

SHAWN J. YOUNG (D.O.B. 12/26/80) was arraigned yesterday in Dorchester District Court on charges of trafficking in cocaine between 14 and 27 grams, violating the state’s drug laws within 1000’ of the John Marshall Elementary School, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. more »

A thrice-convicted drunk driver was held on high bail for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, stealing a deliveryman’s car, and crashing it twice before being arrested just after midnight, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

CHARLES RAMPINO (D.O.B. 9/28/63) of Jamaica Plain was arraigned this morning in Dorchester District Court on a nine-count complaint charging him with assault and battery, larceny of a motor vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident causing personal injury, failing to stop for police, operating with a suspended license, and operating under the influence as a fourth offense.
Judge Michael J. Coyne set his bail at $75,000 cash, the amount recommended by Assistant District Attorney Peter Pasciucco. more »

A 25-year-old Dorchester woman was ordered to have no contact with her 1-year-old son after allegedly punching him on the face on board an MBTA bus yesterday afternoon, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ERICA RYAN (D.O.B. 7/24/86) was arraigned this morning in Roxbury District Court on a count of assault and battery on a child causing injury. Assistant District Attorney Esther Laine recommended that she be held on $25,000 cash bail and requested an order that she stay away from and have no contact with the boy; Judge David Weingarten set bail at $500 but imposed the stay away order. more »

The man accused of strangling 87-year-old Zahia Salem to death appeared in Suffolk Superior Court today, more than 20 years after a neighbor found her bloodied remains inside her South End residence, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

CHARLES BROOK, Jr. (D.O.B. 10/3/44), a.k.a. CHARLES BROOKS, a.k.a. CHARLES LEWIS, also a one-time resident of the South End, was arraigned on a single count of first-degree murder today in connection with Salem’s Nov. 29, 1989, homicide. The Suffolk County Grand Jury on Friday returned an indictment charging a Dorchester man with murder for the 2004 homicide of Julaine Jules, setting the stage for his arraignment in Superior Court later this month, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

The indictment charges SHABAZZ AUGUSTINE (D.O.B. 2/19/79) with first-degree murder for the asphyxiation death of the 26-year-old Malden resident, whose body was wrapped in plastic bags when it surfaced in the Charles River on Sept. 19, 2004. more »

A Chelsea man will be held without bail for as much as 60 days after his attempt to jump an MBTA fare gate got him arrested on gun charges, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

HAMILTON RODRIGUEZ (D.O.B. 1/23/91) was arraigned in South Boston District Court today on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm. Judge Michael Bolden set his bail on the gun charge at $20,000 and, at prosecutors’ request, revoked his open bail on a drug case out of Chelsea District Court. more »

An East Boston murder defendant duct taped the face and wrists of an older family friend, strangled him to death with a chain, and doused him with charcoal lighter fluid, then stole an television and electronics from the man’s house before returning and setting his remains on fire in the basement of a fully-occupied residential building, a Suffolk County prosecutor said at the suspect’s arraignment today.

MARCO TULIO FLORES (D.O.B. 10/3/93) allegedly told homicide detectives that he killed 27-year-old Jaime Galdamez because Galdamez had sexually molested him for years. Flores was arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court this morning following his indictment on charges of first-degree murder and arson of a dwelling. At prosecutors’ request, Clerk Magistrate Gary D. Wilson ordered Flores held without bail. more »
