BOSTON, May 30, 2013—A Chelsea man was ordered held without bail today at his arraignment for the shooting deaths of Zouaoui Dani-Elkebir and Karima El-Hakim earlier this month, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

State Police homicide detectives assigned to Conley’s office and Chelsea Police detectives arrested MAURICE MORRISON (D.O.B. 2/19/85) last night on two counts of murder stemming from the May 13 slayings. Dani-Elkebir, 52, and El-Hakim, 38, were found dead in Dani-Elkebir’s livery car on Crescent Avenue in the early morning hours of May 13. more »

BOSTON, May 30, 2013—A Malden man today began serving a prison sentence after his conviction last week on charges he stole more than $310,000 from his employer while also fraudulently receiving unemployment benefits, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

RYAN VOSE (D.O.B. 9/12/79) pleaded guilty May 23 to three counts of larceny by scheme; five counts each of forgery, uttering, and making false entry on corporate books; and six counts of unemployment compensation fraud. In doing so, he admitted stealing more than $300,000 from the business for which he worked and defrauding the Massachusetts Division of Unemployment Assistance out of more than $47,000. more »

BOSTON, May 30, 2013—State Police detectives assigned to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, along with Troop E investigators and the Crime Scene Services Section, are investigating the death of a man who may have suffered a heart attack during a violent struggle in which he bit a trooper.

The man, identified as a 47-year-old Windsor, Connecticut, resident, was wandering on a highway ramp near Interchange 19 of the Massachusetts Turnpike eastbound shortly before 10:15 last night when a trooper working a paid detail spotted him and directed him off the ramp. An additional trooper arrived on scene at about this time. more »

BOSTON, May 30, 2013—An East Boston man was arraigned this week on charges he stabbed his drinking companion in the head and told police that a stranger with a machete did the deed, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

HUGO VENTURA (D.O.B. 1/24/83) was arraigned Tuesday in East Boston District Court on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a knife.  Assistant District Attorney Janine D’Amico requested bail be set at $1,000.  Judge Roberto Ronquillo imposed $100 bail, and the defendant was ordered held on an immigration detainer. more »

BOSTON, May 28, 2013—A Level III sex offender from Roxbury pleaded guilty to strangling 48-year-old Jewell Alsop to death as his trial on that charge was set to begin, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

On the first day of jury selection, FITZHUGH NEWTON III (D.O.B. 3/26/59) pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Alsop’s Feb. 25, 2009, homicide. He was sentenced to the mandatory term for that offense, life in prison. more »

BOSTON, May 23, 2013—The younger sister of a man sought for Steven Jones’ homicide was arraigned yesterday on charges that she threatened potential witnesses in the slaying, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JELAINE FLORES (D.O.B. 4/26/95) of Charlestown was arraigned yesterday on two counts of witness intimidation and one count of making annoying or harassing phone calls. Assistant District Attorney Gretchen Lundgren recommended that she be held on $2500 cash bail; Judge Lawrence McCormick exceeded that recommendation and imposed $3500 cash bail. Flores was additionally ordered to wear a GPS tracking device, and have no contact with the victims if she posts that amount. more »

BOSTON, May 22, 2013—A Dorchester man who works at a Jamaica Plain school was held on $10,000 cash bail today on methamphetamine trafficking charges, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

STEPHEN W. DORAN (D.O.B. 3/26/56) was arraigned today in West Roxbury District Court following his arrest yesterday by State Police. Assistant District Attorney Rakhi Lahiri recommended $500,000 bail; Judge Michael Coyne imposed the lower amount but ordered Doran to wear a GPS device and remain on home confinement except for medical appointments if he posts that amount. more »

BOSTON, May 22, 2013—A defendant who pleaded guilty to heroin charges before the crisis at the Department of Public Health drug testing facility doesn’t get to withdraw that knowing, willing, and voluntary admission now that one of its former chemists has been indicted, a municipal court judge has ruled.

“If the evidence doesn’t support a case, then we don’t pursue it,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, whose office prosecuted the case and argued against the defendant’s motion to withdraw his plea. “The evidence in this case unquestionable supports the charge and the conviction. The judge here made the right and sensible call on the facts and the law. The crisis at the DPH lab, as grave as it is, is not a ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card for everyone ever convicted of a drug offense, as some have suggested.” more »

Conley today joined Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis to deliver the following remarks on Operation H, a long-term investigation targeting drug distribution and suppressing violent crime in the area of Roxbury’s H-Block and surrounding streets:

BOSTON, May 21, 2013—The state’s highest court today denied appeals by two Boston gang members whose 2003 attempt to shoot a rival instead left a pregnant woman seriously wounded with a gunshot injury and her baby dead after an emergency Caesarian section, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

The 15-page decision by the Supreme Judicial Court means that ANDRE GREEN (D.O.B. 5/29/84) of Boston and CHIMEZIE AKARA (D.O.B. 10/7/83) of Roslindale will serve out their life sentences without the possibility of parole in the murder of Baby Boy Barry, who suffered mortal injuries while inside his mother’s womb on the evening of Feb. 5, 2003. The mother, a 29-year-old Lynn resident at the time, was rushed to Boston Medical Center for emergency surgery. Her child was delivered about two weeks early but, according to medical testimony, would have survived but for his grievous injuries. more »

BOSTON, May 21, 2013—The men who killed Billie Kee and Kevin Thomas, Jr., were sentenced to consecutive life terms for their murder plus an additional decade for using a high-capacity firearm in the 2011 slayings, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

The terms had been recommended by Conley’s office, and at prosecutors’ request will not begin until the two complete the sentences they’re already serving for unrelated offenses – Corbin an assault and battery, and Fulgiam for violating the terms of his probation on an earlier conviction. more »

BOSTON, May 20, 2013—The two men charged with murdering Billie Marie Kee and Kevin Thomas, Jr., in their Hyde Park home two years ago were convicted of all charges today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

On their first full days of deliberations after hearing lawyers’ closing arguments Friday, a Suffolk Superior Court jury convicted MICHAEL CORBIN (D.O.B. 11/10/70) and EARL FULGIAM (D.O.B. 4/14/80), both of Mattapan, of two counts of first-degree murder under all three theories of murder – deliberate premeditation, extreme atrocity or cruelty, and felony murder – as well as armed robbery and various firearm offenses. more »

BOSTON, May 17, 2013—A Quincy man was held without bail today on charges he shot and killed two other men in November, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

KEON MONTEIRO (D.O.B. 3/19/89) was arraigned today on two counts of murder in the Nov. 28 shooting deaths of 21-year-old Victor Otoadese and 25-year-old Sean Repetto, both of Quincy.  At the request of Assistant District Attorney Patrick Devlin, Judge Michele Hogan ordered Monteiro held without bail. more »

Manslaughter Plea in East Boston Strangulation, Arson

BOSTON, May 16, 2013—An East Boston teen today admitted to strangling an older family friend to death with a dog chain, accepting a 15-year prison term for killing the man who sexually abused him as a child rather than go to trial on a murder charge, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

MARCO TULIO FLORES (D.O.B. 10/3/93) pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and arson at today’s proceedings in connection with the 2011 homicide of 28-year-old Jaime Galdamez in the victim’s East Boston apartment. Flores had initially been charged with first-degree murder. more »

BOSTON, May 16, 2013—A Roxbury woman was arraigned yesterday on charges she attempted to extort thousands of dollars from a man whose car brushed against her in traffic, allegedly telling the victim that she planned to use the cash for cosmetic surgery, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DEBORAH YI (D.O.B. 2/1/89) was arraigned in South Boston District Court on a charge of extortion.  At the recommendation of Assistant District Attorney William Champlin, Judge Michael Bolden released Yi on her own recognizance on the conditions she stay away from and have no contact with the victim and report to probation once a month. more »

BOSTON, May 13, 2013—A Stoughton man was held on $500,000 cash bail today at his hospital bed arraignment on charges that he crashed his car while drunk and killed his passenger, 20-year-old Evan Bard of Agawam, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Assistant District Attorney Melissa Brooks of the DA’s Major Felony Bureau recommended that amount for SEAN E. JACKMAN (D.O.B. 1/18/89), arraigned at Boston Medical Center today on charges of motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence arising out of Bard’s death in Jackman’s vehicle at about 11:50 on Friday night. more »

BOSTON, May 10, 2013—A Chelsea man today admitted to his role in the fatal shooting of Ronald Palacios in 2010, accepting a state prison term followed by probation rather than face trial, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

KEVIN SEMIGLIA (D.O.B. 1/14/90) pleaded guilty to the crimes of manslaughter, unlawful possession of a firearm, and assault charges in connection with Palacios’ May 4, 2010, shooting death. At the request of Assistant District Attorneys Mark Zanini and Gregory Henning, Suffolk Superior Court Judge Janet Sanders sentenced him to 9½ years in state prison followed by two years of probation. more »

BOSTON, May 10, 2013—The state’s highest court today affirmed a Roxbury woman’s conviction in the premeditated murder of her ex-boyfriend and another man, as well as the attempted murder a of third, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

The Supreme Judicial Court upheld the convictions of TONEIKA BRITT (D.O.B. 9/25/76), who in 2009 was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of her ex-boyfriend, 29-year-old Jesse Calhoun, and his friend, 20-year-old Robert Turner. Britt was also convicted of one count of armed assault with intent to murder for nonfatal injuries to a third victim and unlawful possession of a firearm. more »

BOSTON, May 8, 2013—The state’s highest court today reversed two lower courts’ decisions to suppress gun and drug evidence recovered from a Jamaica Plain stash house, ruling that a police officer’s affidavit was sufficient to show probable cause that evidence of criminal activity at that location, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

The ruling allows Suffolk prosecutors to move forward in the case against REGINALD CLAGON (D.O.B. 12/5/79), ANTHONY GERALD (D.O.B.7/4/87), and GREGORY KIMBLE (D.O.B. 2/5/87), who were arrested in 2010.  Clagon is charged with trafficking in cocaine, Gerald with possession with intent to distribute a Class A substance and possession of a Class B substance, and Kimble with trafficking in cocaine, possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. more »

BOSTON, May 8, 2013—A Salem man was on probation for groping two women at North Station when he allegedly groped a third on a Green Line train late last year, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DANE MULLIN (D.O.B. 4/26/86) was arraigned in the Boston Municipal Court yesterday on one count of indecent assault and battery for the Dec. 17, 2012, incident on a train traveling outbound on the E Line. Assistant District Attorney Jessica Erickson recommended that he be held on $20,000 cash bail; Judge Mark Hart Summerville imposed $8,000 bail and ordered him held without bail for allegedly violating the terms of his open probation and on open warrants charging him with failure to register as a sex offender and assault and battery, both out of Salem District Court. more »

BOSTON, May 7, 2013—Suffolk prosecutors obtained high bail and strict conditions of release for three men arraigned on separate gun charges yesterday in Dorchester District Court, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

“Every gun arrest averts a potential shooting,” Conley said. “We’re taking firearms off the street, but just as importantly we’re those who carry and use them off the street, too. BOSTON, May 6, 2013—A Suffolk Superior Court judge has denied two recidivist drug dealers’ motions to stay their sentences, which were based on convictions unrelated to a former Department of Public Health chemist now under indictment, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Regional Administrative Justice Jeffrey Locke denied motions by LANDERS IVEY (D.O.B. 6/18/59) and PAUL FIDLER (D.O.B. 4/17/65) to release them from prison while they await decisions on their respective motions to vacate their guilty pleas. Both men are serving time for drug distribution; neither one had the drug evidence in his case tested by Annie Dookhan, the former Department of Public Health chemist criminally charged by the Massachusetts Attorney General. more »

BOSTON, May 3, 2013—A friend of two brothers charged with the murder of 17-year-old Andre Matthew was held on high bail today at his arraignment for allegedly trying to stymie the investigation into that 2012 homicide, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DANIEL WILKINS-MURPHY, 19, of Roxbury was arraigned this afternoon in Suffolk Superior Court following his indictment yesterday for perjury and misleading an investigator. Boston Police arrested him on a warrant at his home this morning. more »

BOSTON, May 3, 2013—A Revere man yesterday pleaded guilty to the 2011 beating that caused life-threatening injuries to his then-girlfriend’s son, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSEPH TESTA (D.O.B. 5/19/82) yesterday appeared in Suffolk Superior Court, where he pleaded guilty to the indicted charges of assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury and reckless endangerment of a child. Judge Raymond Brassard sentenced Testa to six to nine years in state prison, the term recommended by prosecutors. more »

BOSTON, May 2, 2013—Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley has assigned a seasoned prosecutor to the investigation of a fire in Allston that claimed the life of a young woman this weekend.

Conley named Assistant District Attorney David Bradley to oversee the death investigation arising out of a fire that broke out at 87 Linden St. on the morning of April 28. Currently assigned to the DA’s Senior Trial Unit, Bradley once served as the office’s arson point prosecutor. As with all death investigations in the City of Boston, the assigned prosecutor is working with Boston Police detectives. more »

BOSTON, May 2, 2013—A Roxbury man was arraigned last week for a violent assault and robbery in which he claimed to responding police that he was the victim, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

TORIN TRAYNOR (D.O.B. 10/29/85) of Roxbury was arraigned April 24 in West Roxbury District Court on charges of unarmed robbery, assault and battery, and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for allegedly using a tile floor and a shod foot during the alleged attack.  Assistant District Attorney Adrian Bispham recommended bail be set at $750.  Judge Ernest L. Sarason declined to impose monetary bail and released Traynor on his own recognizance. more »

BOSTON, May 1, 2013—An Easton man was sentenced to jail today after he was convicted of drunk driving for the fourth time, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

A Suffolk Superior Court jury yesterday found STEVEN BUCHANAN (D.O.B. 12/12/60) guilty of operating under the influence of alcohol and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. Because it could have prejudiced the defendant, jurors were not told that Buchanan had previously been convicted of drunk driving on three prior occasions. more »

BOSTON, May 1, 2013—The man convicted of stabbing 19-year-old Kenneth Soto to death was sentenced to life in prison today, while the friend who tried to help him to evade arrest received jail time and a request to write a letter to Soto’s grieving family, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

A Suffolk Superior Court jury found HECTOR “NEMO” SOTO (D.O.B. 3/16/91) of Roslindale guilty of second-degree murder on April 23.  At a hearing this morning, Judge Raymond Brassard handed down the mandatory sentence for that crime, life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. Hector Soto and Kenneth Soto were not related. more »

BOSTON, May 1, 2013—A Fenway man was arraigned on firearms charges yesterday after criminalists recovered his fingerprint on the magazine of a 9mm handgun that police earlier found stashed in a Dorchester alley, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

RAHIYM MERVIN (D.O.B. 10/16/92) was arraigned yesterday in Roxbury District Court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, and unlawful possession of a large-capacity feeding device. Because of a prior conviction for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Mervin was additionally charged as a Level I armed career criminal. more »
