BOSTON, July 31, 2012—A Quincy man will serve up to a decade behind bars and his Dorchester associate will serve at least five years for their shared possession of a large-capacity semiautomatic rifle that one of them pointed at a Boston Police officer last year, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

MARVIN VEIGA (D.O.B. 2/15/89) of Quincy pleaded guilty today to unlawful possession of a rifle, unlawful possession of a large-capacity weapon, carrying a loaded firearm, and unlawful possession of a large-capacity feeding device for the Colt .223 Sporter rifle he possessed on the night of Jan. 8, 2011. He also pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon for pointing it at pursuing Boston Police officers. Suffolk Superior Court Judge Christine Roach sentenced him to a term of eight to 10 years in state prison to be followed by two years of probation. more »

BOSTON, July 31, 2012—The wheelman in a burglary at a Seaport District carpet company left his alleged partner in the dust after ramming a police cruiser and dragging his alleged partner behind his pickup truck, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

CHARLES P. THOMPSON (D.O.B. 2/21/66) of Dorchester was arraigned in his hospital bed yesterday on charges of breaking and entering in the nighttime, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and malicious destruction of property for the Sunday night incident. more »

BOSTON, July 30, 2012—A Boston man was held today after Boston Police returned him here from California and Suffolk prosecutors arraigned him on a murder charge for the April death of James A. Taylor, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ANTWAN WATHEY (D.O.B. 9/24/87) of Dorchester is accused of intentionally driving his 2000 Mazda Millennia at Taylor, who was walking on Talbot Avenue, striking and killing the 20-year-old on the early morning of April 13. At the request of Assistant District Attorney Michael Callahan, Dorchester District Court Judge Robert Baylor ordered Wathey held without bail. more »

BOSTON, July 25, 2012—A Hyde Park man was sentenced to seven years in state prison today after admitting that he intended to sell a large amount of prescription painkillers delivered to him from Florida, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

GREGORY HORAN (D.O.B. 11/26/79) pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute. In addition to imposing prosecutors’ recommended prison sentence, Suffolk Superior Court Christine Roach ordered that he serve a year of probation upon his release. more »

BOSTON, July 23, 2012—A Boston Juvenile Court jury late last week found a Dorchester youth responsible for shooting one woman in the face and firing at three others after a fistfight near Franklin Field, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Suffolk prosecutors had indicted ALEXANDER SOTO (D.O.B. 12/11/93) as a youthful offender on one count of unlawful possession of a firearm, one count of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and four counts of armed assault with intent to murder for firing at the three women, ages 22, 23, and 24, and one of those victims’ 5-year-old niece. more »

BOSTON, July 20, 2012—A South Boston man was ordered this week to remain in drug treatment and submit to random testing after admitting to facts sufficient for a finding of guilty on charges that he possessed opium poppy pods imported from overseas.

South Boston District Court Judge Michael Bolden yesterday ordered the case against MATTHEW BERKOWITZ, 32, continued without a finding for a period of two years. In addition to drug treatment and testing, Bolden ordered Berkowitz to remain drug free, report weekly to his probation officer, perform 12 hours of community service, and submit to random monitoring of his Internet usage in light of the online nature of his orders for the illicit plants. more »

BOSTON, July 20, 2012—A former Belmont resident was arraigned today on for indecent assault and battery in connection with a Tuesday evening incident on the MBTA Green Line, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DOUGLASS EWALD (D.O.B. 7/6/61) was formally charged this morning in the Boston Municipal Court. Assistant District Attorney Katherine Powell told the court that Ewald has a prior record that includes charges of stalking, witness intimidation, and violating a restraining order. She recommended that he be held on $5,000 cash bail and be ordered to wear a GPS monitoring device, stay away from the victim and all MBTA property, and undergo a mental health evaluation. Based on information that he may have access to firearms, Powell also recommended that he be ordered to surrender all firearms. more »

BOSTON, July 20, 2012—A Hyde Park man was arraigned on drunk driving and related charges today for a crash that left a young woman badly injured earlier this year, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

RICHARD JEANETTI, 35, who is a Boston Police officer but was off-duty at the time of the collision, was arraigned in West Roxbury District Court on charges of operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, as well as the civil infractions of failing to stop at a stop sign and speeding. Judge Franco Gobourne did not impose bail. more »

BOSTON, July 19, 2012—A West End woman was held on high bail yesterday after her arraignment for allegedly swinging a kitchen knife at a mother and her two young children, Suffolk County District attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DIANE HUGGINS (D.O.B. 2/20/54) was arraigned yesterday in the Boston Municipal Court on two counts each of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Judge Thomas Horgan set bail at $25,000 cash and ordered her to stay away from the victims, a 35-year-old Back Bay woman and her children, ages 1 and 4. more »

BOSTON, July 18, 2012—The Dorchester man accused of gunning down 25-year-old Jason Withers in Grove Hall earlier this year was ordered held without bail at his arraignment this afternoon in Roxbury District Court, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Assistant District Attorney Amy Galatis told Judge David Weingarten that RAMON DINGLE-SMITH (D.O.B. 6/21/92) drove up to a now-closed all-night convenience store at 655 Warren St. at about 4:15 a.m., got out of his vehicle, and walked inside the shop. After stopping briefly at the cash register, Galatis said, he left the store. more »

Says Duress Not a Defense against First-Degree Murder

BOSTON, July 18, 2012—The Supreme Judicial Court this week affirmed each of the convictions against three men who murdered a young woman on a railroad trestle and then dumped her body into the Charles River more than a decade ago, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

After the longest murder trial in modern Suffolk County history, a Suffolk Superior Court jury in 2005 convicted ISMAEL VASQUEZ (D.O.B. 2/15/78); his brother, LUIS VASQUEZ (D.O.B. 4/11/82); HAROLD PARKER (D.O.B. 11/23/73); and SCOTT DAVENPORT (D.O.B. 2/3/74) of first-degree murder for the Nov. 3, 2001, stabbing death of Io Nachtwey, a 21-year-old native of Hawaii, on a railway beneath the Boston University Bridge. All are serving life terms without the possibility of parole. more »

BOSTON, July 16, 2012—A youth baseball coach was held on high bail today after his arraignment on charges that he had improper contact with a young player, and prosecutors say other children have made similar allegations against him, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSE ORTEGA (D.O.B. 7/4/71) of Roslindale, who goes by the nickname “Brujo,” was arrested last night and formally charged this afternoon with four counts of enticement of a child under 16, one count of unnatural and lascivious acts with a child under 16, and one count of attempting to commit a crime – specifically, posing a child under 18 in a state of nudity. more »

BOSTON, July 12, 2012—A Revere woman who requested copies of her criminal record from East Boston District Court was arraigned there this week for allegedly stealing documents the staff provided her, Suffolk county District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

BOSTON, July 11, 2012—A resident at a substance abuse recovery home was held on high bail at his arraignment this week on drug charges he incurred while on probation for two previous drug convictions, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

RONALD DOOLEY (D.O.B. 1/26/62) was arraigned Monday in Dorchester District Court on three counts of possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance and one count each of possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance as a subsequent offense, possession with intent to distribute a Class C substance, and possession of a Class E substance. Judge Kenneth V. Desmond set bail at $15,000, the amount recommended by Assistant District Attorney Gretchen Sherwood. more »

Two defendants, RAHIYM MERVIN (D.O.B. 10/16/92) of Revere and HERBY PAUL (D.O.B. 2/4/95) of Hyde Park were charged following their Friday night arrests after Boston Police tried to pull them over for having a cracked windshield, and TYSHAWN LEWIS-SMITH (D.O.B. 5/13/92) of Roxbury was charged after officers spotted him repeatedly patting his waistband while riding his bicycle early Sunday morning. more »

BOSTON, July 5, 2012—Massachusetts State Police seized a Jamaica Plain man’s handgun and his license to carry it after he allegedly tried to flee a motor vehicle accident while intoxicated, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

SCOTT M. DEVLIN (D.O.B. 11/30/83), who also has an address in Fairhaven, was arraigned today in Roxbury District Court on a single count of carrying a loaded firearm while under the influence of liquor, a misdemeanor punishable by up to two and a half years in a house of correction. Prosecutors recommended bail of $500 and Judge David Poole released him on his own recognizance. more »
