Two Hungarian nationals were held without bail at their arraignments today on larceny charges stemming from an online scam in which vehicles – some fictitious and some belonging to unwitting victims – were put up for auction without their knowledge or permission, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Goldberger of Conley’s Special Prosecutions Unit recommended that ZSOLT LENDVAI (D.O.B. 12/13/85) and ENIKO SOMODI (D.O.B. 1/12/82) be held on $1 million cash bail each, given their apparent access to large amounts of cash and multiple passports from different countries. more »

The $75,000 cash bail imposed at a Utah man’s arraignment for possessing child pornography will remain in place for now, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

GRANT D. SMITH (D.O.B. 5/28/64) of Cottonwood Heights sought to have that amount lowered at a bail review in Suffolk Superior Court this afternoon. Wearing orange scrubs, Smith appeared via videolink from the Nashua Street Jail, where he has been held since his arraignment Monday in East Boston District Court.
Smith’s attorney, Patrick Murphy, asked Judge Carol Ball to reduce his bail under Chapter 276, Sect. 58A(7), of the Massachusetts General Laws. That statute allows a defendant held on bail in district court to petition a superior court judge to reduce his or her bail. more »

The family of slain mechanic Charles Cantave watched through tears today as one of his killers pleaded guilty to murdering him after a small claims court hearing over auto parts, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

CORNELIUS EVANS (D.O.B. 6/19/75) of Dorchester pleaded guilty to second-degree murder this afternoon for his role in Cantave’s March 29, 2010, shooting death a block and a half from Dorchester District Court. Suffolk Superior Court Judge Frank Gaziano imposed the mandatory sentence for that crime, life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. more »

Two former officials in an MBTA employees union have been indicted for larceny and related offenses for allegedly overpaying themselves from union funds, with one additionally accused of failing to pay taxes on his inflated income, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

The Suffolk County Grand Jury on Nov. 10 indicted JOHN HORAN (D.O.B. 7/16/64) of Spencer on two counts of larceny over $250 by scheme and BRIAN SHEEHY (D.O.B. 7/26/69) of Quincy on three counts of larceny over $250, two counts of filing a false tax return, and three counts of filing a false tax return. more »

A Dorchester man was charged with a variety of offenses – including possession of a stun gun – after Boston Police arrested him and his Stoughton companion for a violent purse snatching on Massasoit Street Saturday morning, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

NATHANIEL WEBSTER (D.O.B. 1/29/79) and TAMEIKA DUNBAR (D.O.B. 8/13/82) were arraigned in West Roxbury District Court today on charges of armed robbery and assault and battery. Webster was additionally charged with possession of an electric stun gun and resisting arrest; Dunbar was additionally charged with failing to stop for police. more »

A Utah man arrested Saturday at Logan International Airport was held on high bail following his arraignment for allegedly possessing child pornography, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

Assistant District Attorney Erik Bennett of Conley’s East Boston District Court staff recommended that GRANT D. SMITH (D.O.B. 5/28/64) of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, be held on $150,000 cash bail; Judge Kenneth V. Desmond imposed bail of $75,000. more »

A Boston Municipal Court judge today barred a Framingham woman from Dewey Square after she allegedly interfered with a domestic violence investigation at the Occupy Boston encampment, failed to appear in court, and assaulted Boston Police officers as they arrested her on a default warrant.

JADE ANDERSON (D.O.B. 12/11/91) was arraigned this morning on two separate complaints charging her with disorderly conduct and multiple assault-related offenses. Judge Eleanor Coe Sinnott set a total of $850 cash bail and ordered her to stay away from the scene of the incidents and any other Occupy Boston activities within the City of Boston. more »

A Beverly woman was arraigned today on attempted murder charges for allegedly pouring gasoline on an apartment building’s porch and setting it alight earlier this year, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

SYRETTA COPELAND (D.O.B. 7/9/80) is also charged with arson and causing injury to a firefighter for the Sept. 10 blaze at 130 Devon St., which caused about $185,000 in damages to that building, an adjacent building, and two parked cars. more »

One of two men charged with a serious 2006 stabbing pleaded guilty yesterday rather than face trial for the incident that nearly killed a 25-year-old South Boston man, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ROBERT GLAVIN (D.O.B. 7/16/82) of Boston admitted to aggravated assault and battery for his role in the Sept. 11, 2006, incident near the corner of I Street and East 7th Street. Assistant District Attorney Philip O’Brien recommended that he serve four to five years in state prison; Suffolk Superior Court Judge Carol Ball sentenced him to a term of two to three and a half years. more »

A Woburn man with multiple drunk driving convictions and a suspended license is being held without bail pending a hearing tomorrow that could keep him behind bars until trial, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

At the time of his Boston Municipal Court arraignment last week, THOMAS D. McCUE (D.O.B. 7/11/69) had four convictions for operating under the influence of alcohol in Woburn, Roxbury, and Charlestown dating back to 1992. When he was charged Friday with a fifth, Assistant District Attorney Janine D’Amico moved to have him held without bail pending a hearing tomorrow under the state’s so-called “dangerousness statute.” Judge Annette Forde imposed that order. more »

An Allston man was charged with cruelty to animals today for allegedly firing a blowgun at a stranger’s dog early Saturday morning, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Assistant District Attorney Cameron Merrill recommended that CONNOR M. THOMAS (D.O.B. 5/5/91) be held on $1,000 cash bail at his arraignment this morning in Brighton District Court. Thomas, who is additionally charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, was released on the $300 he posted following his weekend arrest. more »

A Dorchester teen’s bail for a violent South Boston attack has been revoked after he was charged with another beating that sent a man to the hospital this weekend, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DA Conley at State House

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick hands Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley a pen used to sign An Act Relative to the Commercial Exploitation of People into law. Conley submitted key provisions of the legislation, including a presumption that minors arrested in prostitution cases should be treated as victims, not offenders.

As landmark legislation heads to the Massachusetts governor’s desk, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley is lending his voice to a human trafficking training video on that issue for municipal police across the Commonwealth.

On Nov. 18, Conley taped an introduction and interview with David O’Laughlin, director of training for the Municipal Police Institute, to prepare Massachusetts law enforcement officers on how to recognize and combat the trafficking in and exploitation of children, teens, and adults for sexual services and forced labor. more »

The Massachusetts Appeals Court today affirmed a Mattapan man’s 11 convictions for trying to kill four Boston Police officers on New Year’s Day 2003, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

A Suffolk Superior Court jury in 2005 convicted JERMAINE JABBAR BERRY (D.O.B. 5/7/82) of four counts of assault with intent to kill, three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and gun and ammunition offenses. He is currently serving an aggregate term of 31 to 43 years in state prison for pointing a .357 caliber revolver at a friend of his mother’s inside his house, then firing at four Boston Police officers, hitting two of them, when they responded to the residence at about 5:30 a.m. more »

A Brockton woman was arraigned this morning on gun possession charges after Boston Police stopped her car in close proximity to a shooting in the city’s Theater District, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

MIKAYLA ALFORD (D.O.B. 5/26/91) was charged in the Boston Municipal Court with unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition for the loaded handgun recovered from her handbag during a traffic stop just before 2:15 this morning. Alford is not charged in connection with a multiple shooting that took place a short time earlier and a short distance away; her potential link to that shooting, if one exists, remains under investigation. more »

The Suffolk County Grand Jury yesterday returned an indictment charging a South Boston man with first-degree murder for the beating death of 65-year-old Barbara Tagen in her Andrew Square apartment, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ADAM CASSINO (DOB 5/9/86), who lived across the street from Tagen, is expected to face arraignment on that charge on Dec. 1 in the Magistrate’s Session of Suffolk Superior Court. He has been held without bail since his district court arraignment on Sept. 22. more »

A homeless man will serve up to five years in prison for jumping into a cab last year, robbing its passenger of her smart phone, and then slamming her friend’s face into the pavement after demanding money to get it back, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

GERALD HAMILTON (D.O.B. 2/10/66), who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty yesterday as his trial was set to begin on charges of unarmed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Suffolk Superior Court Judge Christine McEvoy sentenced him to 4 to 5 years in state prison followed by 18 months of probation upon his release. She further ordered Hamilton to undergo drug treatment and to stay away from the victims. more »

A Brighton man is expected to face trial next November for allegedly murdering his elderly neighbor, William Thomas, as the victim sat in a wheelchair in the Ledgemere Road housing development they both shared, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Suffolk Superior Court Clerk Magistrate Gary Wilson scheduled RANDY FLOYD MOORE’s trial for Nov. 5, 2012, and ordered him held without bail until that time. Moore (D.O.B. 11/13/56) was indicted Nov. 8 on charges of first-degree murder, armed assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and home invasion. more »

State Police detectives assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office are investigating the death of an Arizona man on board a bus that arrived in Boston last night.
Members of the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit responded to the South Station bus terminal at about 9:00 p.m. after the 29-year-old Scottsdale resident’s remains were discovered in the restroom of a Boston Express bus from Londonderry, New Hampshire. more »

DA Conley Speaks at Hope Blooms Event

Children’s Advocacy Center trustees Peter Flaherty (left) and DA Conley (right) flank Boston’s First Lady, Angela Menino, and child abuse prosecutor Leora Joseph on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, where more than 1100 crocus bulbs have been planted, each one representing a child referred to the CAC after allegations of abuse in 2010. The bulbs are expected to bloom in April 2012, coinciding with Child Abuse Prevention Month.

A Roxbury woman this week admitted to lying to the Suffolk County Grand Jury as it investigated the shooting death of 13-year-old Luis Gerena in 2007, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DESTINY GUNN (D.O.B. 9/2/89) pleaded guilty Tuesday to the crime of perjury, making her the third defendant to be convicted in Gerena’s Jan. 12, 2007, slaying amid a gang feud in which he had no part. more »

A South Boston man today admitted to throwing a glass at a fellow bar patron, only to have it shatter and kill 23-year-old Michael DiMaria when it slashed his throat, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

HECTOR GUARDIOLA (D.O.B. 5/8/85) pleaded guilty to the indicted charge of involuntary manslaughter for DiMaria’s death at the Lansdowne Pub just after midnight on Aug. 14, 2010. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for injuries to two others struck by the glass or its shards. more »

A motorist was arraigned today for allegedly driving at a candidate for the Winthrop Town Council as the victim stood with several children on the Winthrop Bridge last night, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

A Roslindale man was arraigned on gun and drug charges for the second time in four months yesterday after Boston Police recovered a loaded handgun and about 80 grams of heroin in his apartment while he was free on bail in an earlier case, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

A South End man and an unknown bystander foiled a purse snatching this week, grabbing two alleged perps and handing them over to Boston Police before they could flee with the victim’s handbag, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Assistant District Attorney Brendan Cox recommended that MOHAMED ALI BILE (D.O.B. 1/1/85) be held on $150,000 cash bail at his arraignment today on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, unlawfully discharging a firearm within 500’ of a dwelling, unlawfully carrying a rifle on a public way, and unlawful possession of a large-capacity feeding device. Three men charged with soliciting sex from Boston Police officers posing as a young teenage girl have been ordered to stay away from all children while their cases are pending, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

JOHN CAPUTO (D.O.B. 2/10/48) of South Boston, DANIEL KLIM (D.O.B. 5/18/73) of Cambridge, and JOHN NGUYEN (D.O.B. 7/28/87) of Randolph were all arraigned in Dorchester District Court this morning on charges of soliciting sex for a fee and enticement of a child under 16 for their alleged efforts this weekend to engage in sexual activity with a person they believed to be a 15-year-old girl. All three posted $300 cash bail following their arrests Saturday and walked into court today. more »

Two men were sentenced today for unrelated Boston homicides in 2007 and 2010, with one taking a mandatory life term following his conviction for murder and the other accepting up to 14½ years in state prison rather than go to trial, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Superior Court Judge Frank Gaziano sentenced EMMANUEL DASILVA (D.O.B. 10/24/84) of Dorchester to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury convicted him Friday of first-degree murder for the Feb. 13, 2007, shooting death of 21-year-old Fausto Sanchez. Dasilva is the second man to be convicted of Sanchez’ murder. more »

A Suffolk Superior Court jury late this afternoon convicted a Dorchester man of all charges for his role in a 2007 Maynard Street shooting that resulted in the death of 21-year-old Fausto Sanchez and serious injuries to two of Sanchez’ friends, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Jurors convicted EMMANUEL DASILVA (D.O.B. 10/24/84) of first-degree murder and multiple counts of armed assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for shooting at Sanchez’ four friends, striking two of them, on Feb. 13, 2007. One of the surviving victims was left permanently disabled from gunshot wounds sustained to his back, side torso, and left arm. more »

Two alleged gang members were ordered held without bail today on charges that they murdered a 16-year-old boy and nearly killed his 14-year-old friend on Geneva Avenue earlier this year, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

SHELDON MATTIS (D.O.B. 1/22/93) and NYASANI WATT (D.O.B. 10/5/93), both of Dorchester, were arraigned this afternoon in Dorchester District Court on counts of murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Watt was additionally charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm for a handgun he allegedly had on him at the time of his arrest this morning. more »

An Allston man admitted stabbing Julio Villalta to death in Allston last year, just a few hours after a recently-apprehended fugitive was formally charged with the shooting death of Shawn Flores in September, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.
